The Economist Reading Challenge

The Economist RC Challenge Starts on April 6th!


Why?
Let's conquer Reading Comprehension together! Nothing makes your RC skills better than reading tough and challenging texts as suggested by both bb and GMATNinja in Improving RC by Reading.



How it works:
  • Every Tuesday we will post links in this forum topic, so make sure to bookmark it!
  • On Tuesdays at 8am Pacific Time we will post links which will contain articles from The Economist along with questions.
  • Your job is to read the articles and post the answers. Some answers may be multiple choice, while others may be open-ended.
  • To make it fair, your answers will not be visible to other participants until the weekly competition ends on Friday.
  • You will have 72 hours (3 days) to submit your responses. The submissions will be closed on Friday morning at 8am Pacific Time.
  • Winners will be announced on the following Monday, and then a new competition round will start the following day (Tuesday).
  • Important: you will need to register for a free online account with The Economist which allows you to access five articles per month absolutely free. Registration is easy!
  • You also get a free 3-month digital subscription to The Economist when you purchase one of The Economist GMAT Tutor Plans

Hello AkashM

At the moment the only way is to bookmark this post and revisit it on 8 am pacific tomorrow, you will see the update. Apart from that we will announce the update via global notification (at the top upper right side of your account's personal area). Don't worry for it as you have commented on this post you will definitely receive an email notification whenever a reply will be posted here.

how long should it take to read article 1 ?

It could varies person to person based on one's speed of reading and level of comprehension. At average I think 6-7 minutes are needed to read the complete article. The best way to know exactly is to read it by yourself :)

hmm but i think we have to read it like we are doing the GMAT correct ? Long articles like this should be reading 4 mins max i think

hmm but i think we have to read it like we are doing the GMAT correct ? Long articles like this should be reading 4 mins max i think



I would take the proportionate time to read the article. Try to keep the GMAT pace. Brisk. Use the timer!
Obviously these differ from article to article but I will put the target reading time based on the multiple of words. E.g. if GMAT article is 200 words and the Economist is 400 words, then you would have 2x the time, which on average ends up about 8 mins (4 min being the average length reading). This is just an example. I actually have not run the numbers yet :angel:
