Finally, some direct answers from GMAC! Nice work. Who would have guessed that Business Because was referring to sending GMAT Focus scores to MBA programs via the school score report?

This still doesn't explain the "the current exam breaks down your score by section" language, but whatever.

Would you also mind trying to extract more details from this person about question-level vs. section-level adaptability on the GMAT Focus—in particular, on the Data Insights section—which has been alternately described by GMAC as both "adaptive" and "not computer adaptive" (possibly a mistake, but right there on page 215 of the O.G. 2023-2024)?

Some interesting changes to multiple test attempts!

1. Are applicants allowed to book multiple appointments for the GMAT Classic Exam from now until Jan 31, 2024? Or in general this policy has been changed?

    To clarify candidates can have multiple future appointments scheduled, e.g.:
    Candidates can have multiple future appointments scheduled across exam versions and channels. However, only one appointment can be booked at a time, and appointments must be scheduled at least 16-days apart. Our 12-month and lifetime limits also apply across exam versions and channels - only 5 attempts are permitted in a rolling 12-month period and 8 attempts in a lifetime.



2. Can a person book an online test and an in person test that are fewer than 16 days apart? Does the 16 day rule apply in any case or does it only apply in case the same test format is taken again? (repeat version of the question just in case)

    The 16-day rule applies regardless of the delivery method a candidates choose.


3. "Updated score reports will also include more detailed insights on your performance, and only one exam score—the current exam breaks down your score by section. Registrants will be able to send scores to five schools for free."
What does "only one exam score" mean? Is it a "total exam score" rather than section scores or does it refer to one exam versus multiple exam scores (like if you previously took the exam)? Also, does this have anything to do with what is reported to the schools--do they get just one exam score?

    This will answer your question since there are some parts I believe are mixed in the question that need to be addressed in separate bullets.

  • Once candidates start taking the GMAT™ Focus Edition, they will receive their Total Score, Sub-Section scores, and percentiles for each. The Official Score Report will also include detailed performance insights for overall performance and sub-section performance. Candidates will be able to access GMAT Focus Edition scores and any valid scores from previous exams via their mba.com Account.

  • The "only one exam score" refers to what is reported to schools - with the GMAT Focus Edition - similar to the GMAT exam delivered online - candidates have the flexibility to select which score to send to which programs. Only the score selected will be sent to the program(s) selected (no other scores will be sent along with it).

  • Note that the Official Score Report that schools receive has been updated to account for both versions of the GMAT™ exam, and they are fully aware of the score scale changes and score concordance tables, so if candidates are asking about that, rest assured that schools do know what to expect.

TheGriffin - I think there is a greater than usual risk that slots will be few for in-person test. Online is likely going to be available but I would check either way (online and in person now to see general availability). There are many factors including time and location so I would keep tabs on it - perhaps check weekly to see the load/availability.

FYI - if you are planning to take a test on Jan 5th for Jan 10th deadline, I would highly recommend taking it in person at a test center. Taking it online can have delays in score due to a review or in testing due to a technical difficulty but taking GMAT in person guarantees you will get a score right away and it won't be reviewed/etc. It will be less risky.

    4. Your vacation will be adaptive and the more you enjoy it, the harder it will be to enjoy it until you can't handle it. However, if you are able to handle it and complete the vacation with the maximum score, you will be banned from taking future GMAT vacations for 5 years.
    5. At the end of the vacation, you will have a choice to share 5 photos with your designated recipients. Any additional recipients can be added at a fee of $35/recipient.
    6. If you need a break, you may raise your hand and a proctor will pause your vacation.
    7. If you take your vacation after Jan 31, 2024, all clocks and scheduled will be shifted by 5 minutes.

The percentiles appear to be based on the past 5 years of test-taking.
My guess (this is only a guess) is that GMAC was able to use the previous history of taking questions on the GMAT and since technically no new questions were added to the GMAT Focus, they calculated percentiles based on the GMAT Classic performance.

GMAC will not start using data from this testing year until next testing year.

Hey guys

I'm planning to start applying to B-schools Q3/Q4 2024 onwards.

1. I started working on my GMAT prep about a month ago, wanted to understand if it makes more sense to attempt the classic GMAT before it is phased out or study for the GMAT Focus?

Hi dratinire7,

Both the GMAT and the GMAT Focus are adaptive tests. This means that we shouldn't have to worry too much about "difficulty levels". Instead, focus on your strengths/weaknesses (maybe you're good at SC, or maybe you like DI).

If you're not sure, I recommend you target the Focus edition.

I would recommend that you pick either TTP or MGMAT…. Both of these products are very substantial and completely self-sufficient. Unless you are an experienced test taker who is past 700, I suggest you take one of these products and get an official guide and that should be plenty.

Hi! I've yet to take the official practice tests, but I do have the OG and Quantitative Review Guide, and I know coordinate graphs are part of the syllabus to the extent of slopes and intercepts. At least, that's the extent to which we see this topic in the Official Guide.

I don't think the Focus Edition has coordinate geometry in the "geometry" sense, where for example, you find the area of a figure denoted by points in the graph.

You are spot on Sim_SG3

The coordinate geometry is not tested on the Focus but the underlying concepts are, though they are expected to be solved algebraically rather than graphically.
Also while I know Geometry is officially out of the test, I did run into this question on the GMAT Prep Focus Edition: https://gmatclub.com/forum/a-spherical- ... 16425.html.

A spherical balloon originally had a radius of x centimeters. The balloon was partially deflated by letting out some air so that the volume of the balloon decreased by a%. If the balloon remained spherical while the air was being let out, which of the following expressions in x and a gives the radius, in centimeters, of the partially deflated balloon?

When GMAC said there was no geometry on the GMAT Focus, I think it was more of a reference that you are not expected to know/remember formulas for various geometrical functions and operations. As you can see the volume formula is given here and this is a word problem but heavily relying on the geometric concepts. I would guess Coordinate Geometry is the same way - you don't need to study it, but it may be used as a background for the question.

Hi wanted to ask if coordinate geometry is in the portion for the focus edition? - There is a chapter in TTP but its pretty small

Also has anyone seen any coordinate geometry questions in the official practice tests?


Hi! I've yet to take the official practice tests, but I do have the OG and Quantitative Review Guide, and I know coordinate graphs are part of the syllabus to the extent of slopes and intercepts. At least, that's the extent to which we see this topic in the Official Guide.

I don't think the Focus Edition has coordinate geometry in the "geometry" sense, where for example, you find the area of a figure denoted by points in the graph.
