On the official website it is stated that:

“Tuck grants a limited number of deferred admission requests each year. One-year deferrals are only granted for exceptional, unforeseen circumstances. Admitted students must enroll before requesting a deferral. Requests for deferral must be submitted in writing. Please contact admissions for more information.”

Do you know how easy/difficult it is to obtain a one-year deferral? Any examples of what would qualify as “exceptional”/“unforeseen” circumstances? Are professional reasons ever okay?

My situation:

Submitted my application to Tuck in late October and already did my interview. Yesterday I got a job offer from my dream (post-MBA) employer. B-school wasn't material at the time so I signed the offer letter right away and gave two and a half weeks notice to my current employer this morning. I'll begin in my new job on 2 January 2014.

I want to stay in my new job for at least 18 months (I want to be eligible for rehire when I return to school) so I think I’ll delay business school for a year. If I get an offer from Tuck – and I realize that this is a BIG if – do you think I will be able to get a one-year deferral?

If I get an offer, I guess I’ll have to transfer the deposit to them and then request a deferral as per the instructions above. If, in this hypothetical situation, they won't accommodate my request, can I reapply next year without losing my deposit (assuming I get in again; obviously, the deposit will be lost if I don’t get in)? What would you do if you were me (in this hypothetical situation)?

My first thought was that getting a dream job is probably not an exceptional and unforseen circumstance. After all, you knew this might happen if you applied to the job in the first place. However, it won't hurt to ask. Get the admit first and then you can decide what's more important. Hopefully you will have some good news in a couple of weeks but it may be that you don't need to worry about the asking for a deferral at all. All in all, you're in a good spot anyhow. The "worst" case scenario would be picking between your dream job and an admit at a phenomenal school, no bad option there really.

[edit] It's pretty awesome seeing TheSenator writing a blog post on the Tuck blog!

Congrats on the new job! I agree with domotron. My first thought was getting your dream job before an MBA definitely changes the "Why MBA" of your current application.

Once you get the admit (if you get the admit) you can always have an open discussion with your new dream job employer about the situation. Chances are high that they won't mind and post MBA you can still get into the same company probably in a slightly different role. Its ultimately your choice to make and hope you get to do it!.

I agree with Domotron, receiving a job offer probably isn't an unforeseen circumstance. You would also have to convince them why do you still need the MBA once you've already started working at the company you wanted to work after school. That being said, I'll share my experience from last year: I was accepted at a top-15 school with $$. After being admitted (but before paying the deposit), I found out that my wife was pregnant, and she would not be able to move to the US with me when classes were supposed to start, and consequently I would not be able to see the birth of my child if I did move to the US. Besides that, I hadn't planned in advance for the costs of supporting a kid during my MBA. Having explained all that to the admissions committee, they said they could not grant me a deferral. So I had to postpone my MBA plans for a year.
I believe deferrals are granted under extreme circumstances. But that is just my opinion. If you do get in, all you can do is ask. The worst thing that will happen is that you'll have to apply again, and if you were able to gain admission this year, I believe that you'll have an even stronger profile next year.
Congratulations on the dream job!

Best,

Bizwiz
