Two data sets S and R are defined as follows:
Data set S: 28, 30, 25, 28, 27
Data set R: 22, 19, 15, 17, 21, 25
By how much is the median of data set S greater than the median of data set R?

(A) 5
(B) 6
(C) 7
(D) 8
(E) 9

Rearranging the data points in each set so that they are in ascending order, we have:

Data set S: 25, 27, 28, 28, 30
Data set R: 15, 17, 19, 21, 22, 25

Thus, we see that the median of set S is 28 and the median of set R is (19 + 21)/2 = 40/2 = 20.

So the median of Set S is 8 more than the median of set R.

Theory

➡ Median is the middle value of the set.
➡ In case of even number of numbers in the set: Median is the mean of the two middle numbers (after the numbers are arranged in the increasing / decreasing order)
➡ In case of odd number of numbers in the set: Median is the middle number (after the numbers are arranged in increasing/ decreasing order)

Two data sets S and R are defined as follows
    Data set S: 28, 30, 25, 28, 27
    Data set R: 22, 19, 15, 17, 21, 25

Median of Set S

Arranging the number is ascending order we get

Data set S: 25, 27, 28, 28, 30

Since, there are 5 value so Median = Middle Term = \(\frac{5+1}{2}\) term = \(3^{rd}\) term = 28

Median of Set R

Arranging the number is ascending order we get

Data set R: 15, 17, 19, 21, 22, 25

Since, there are 6 value so Median = Mean of the two middle numbers = \(\frac{19+21}{2}\) = \(\frac{40}{2}\) = 20

How much is the median of data set S greater than the median of data set R

=> Median of Set S - Median of Set R = 28 - 20 = 8

So, Answer will be D.
Hope it helps!
