Hi all,
I'm from India and I have 5.5 years of experience in analytics and decision sciences. I work for an American product company right now. I had lowered down on Montreal as my study destination, so I focused on applying to McGill and John Molson School of Business (Concordia University). I had also applied to a few other schools just to try my hand. I received a refusal from McGill but got an admission offer from JMSB.
I received an admission offer from UBC Sauder last week too. It has no scholarship. I started looking deeper into my network and figured UBC has a lot of my peers in analytics who are studying/have studied there. That got me thinking about whether I should choose UBC.
My objective is to return to product/analytics but in a Canadian firm. And I'm open to exploring consulting opportunities too. The long-term objective is getting a PR. Can anyone help me decide?
UBC Sauder
Pros:
1. Better brand name
2. Better class profile
3. Vancouver - more livable for international candidates
4. Stronger long term network
5. Well structured curriculum
6. No extra language requirement
Cons:
1. Super expensive
2. Questions about how great the Vancouver market is for tech/product
3. 16-month program, so PGWP duration can be short
4. Living is expensive in Vancouver
JMSB Concordia
Pros:
1. Very affordable. Super quick ROI
2. Montreal market. Also proximity to Toronto
3. 2-year program, so a 3-year PGWP is assured
4. Avg pay for my experience range is similar to UBC (CAD 80k+)
5. Living is very affordable in Montreal
Cons:
1. Class profile - hardly anyone from analytics or data science
2. Unsure of what brand value it will add to my CV
3. Not sure about how helpful a network will be here. Especially if good number of people move to Toronto
4. French language to be learned for Quebec
5. Quebec PR system is super slow
Looking forward to your suggestions.
Hello
systemsav,
If money is not a primary factor in decision-making, UBC Sauder is definitely a more competitive admit.
All the best!
