Hi gmatclub
long time lurker first time poster here.
I need to urgently boost my quant from Q40 to Q48 minimum ideally Q49/50.
I sat for GMAT (for the first time) last Dec and received a 680 (Q40/V42).
I took an official GMAT Prep test absolutely cold (with ZERO prep apart from reading the structure of the test) 2 years ago and scored a 600 with Q35 and V38 split.
Didn't do any GMAT Prep at all since then till around mid Sept last year when I started practicing on OG17 Quant questions, and studying the content in
MGMAT while doing some of the practice questions at the end. I focused entirely on Quant and did zero verbal prep. After about 2-3 weeks of prep (1-2 hours each weekday and 3-4 hours each weekend) I took another official GMAT Prep Test in mid Oct and scored a 650 with Q40/V40 split.
I continued with the same number of hours each week, this time buying a
Magoosh premium subscription and focusing on the studying the basics of Quant (watching there
Magoosh video lessons, doing the practice questions in these lessons, while re-reading the theory in each
MGMAT quant book). I continued to practice both PS and DS questions mostly from OG17 and the
OG Quant Supplement as well as some
Magoosh questions.
From mid Oct till my first GMAT exam at the end of Dec I completed 3 more practice tests:
5 Nov:
Manhattan GMAT Test: 580 Q24/V36
3 Dec:
Magoosh GMAT Test: 660 Q45/V36
16 Dec: Official GMAT Prep re-install Q42/V40 (4 IR)
22 Dec: Actual GMAT Test: 680 Q40/V42 (6.0 Essay/4 IR)
In this time I had also attempted 282
Magoosh questions (based on which the score predictor said I should score between 35-43 on quant on the actual exam).
On the day of the test I had to rush my baby to the hospital and in the process forgot to double check ID requirements. I arrived at the test center with 15mins to the test and was told that I needed my passport. I drove back home at breakneck speed, got my passport and rushed back to within the 30min grace period. Needless to say I was very frazzled. Didn't watch the clock during my first break (since we weren't allowed to wear watches and started Quant about 4-5 minutes late). Tried to calm myself down, and hit a decent pace. Was getting more difficult questions, however mid way through I was starting to run out of time. Probably guessed on the last 5-7 questions.
I now plan to retake my GMAT between mid March to mid April. This gives me 3-7 weeks to get my quant from a pathetic Q40 to Q48 min!!!
I don't have too much time with long hours at work and a baby but I'm considering taking up to 2 weeks on unpaid vacation time to dedicate full 8-10/12 hour days to GMAT Quant Prep.
I reckon I've spent too much time reviewing the basic content/theory and probably not enough time dissecting each and every problem I've attempted (I did review each problem done at least once or twice for easier questions and up to 3-4 times for 700 level questions). Apart from that I'm at a loss as to how I should prep for the retake.
I've exhausted all quant questions in OG17 as well as the
OG Quant supplement.
