Hello,
Just wondering if I could get some insight from experts but I have received fee waivers from following schools, i.e, without asking or attending any of their online/offline events:
McCombs - $225 waived for R1
Simon - Not only they have waived my app fee, they have approved my travel stipend, hotel accommodation etc to visit their campus events in Oct
Katz - Waived app fee
Jones - Received an email, and a call from school if I had any questions for application
Now, I should be feeling happy to have all this, right? But my concern is that even though I have strong profile in every front (top undergrad and grad schools, top GPAs, tons of international exposure, co and extra curricular etc), my GMAT score is just 690 (Q51, V31) which I was planning to improve in 2nd attempt in December for R2 applications. Now I feel tempted to apply during R1.
What I came to know from others is that schools sometime send out waivers to candidates who are likely to be rejected so that they can inflate their rejection rates. Seems weird to me but may happen as well.
Any thoughts please?

Hi. Your GMAT is at the high range of those school average/median GMAT scores. Katz, Simon, and Jones probably have 550 and 650 averages. McCombs is 703 - very close. The waivers/invitations are likely based on your GMAT Score since this year many schools are expecting a lower applicant volume due to the economy and jobs going strong for upteenth year in a row.
Waivers are common and are a tool that allows schools to get more people to apply and encourages applicants who would not have otherwise applied to do so.... esp if you have not sent the scores to the schools or you sent them but did not start your applications.
I don't think this is designed to fail people, rather to invite more people to apply than otherwise would have been, so you are not cannon fodder but you are not guaranteed a spot either, though again, a 690 will be a strong score in any of those schools. Take a look at the decision tracker for McCombs: https://gmatclub.com/forum/mccombs-203/ ... acker.html and go back to Class of 2020 (last year) and you will see plenty of folks with 600's, so no, 690 is not a BAD score and definitely is worthwhile in a number of programs. However, as the rule goes - apply only to schools that you intend to attend if you get admitted as otherwise, you are wasting a lot of effort and energy you could direct towards worthwhile applications.

Sounds good, encouraging and exciting. I think I am gonna apply for McCombs, Rice, and Simon during R1.
More later in R2 for target schools. Hopefully, GMAT won't disappoint 2nd time.
