Difficult to evaluate your profile without some stats but given the downward trend in the age of admits, I do think it would be wise to set your sights on European schools, not many seats at IMD but your age will be a non-issue there.

Insead & HEC also solid. Both offer J-term and that might be wise as you don't need an internship. Canadian schools, especially 1-year and J-term, would be good to consider. My most recent blog post goes into detail on which Canadian schools.

Also, consider a 1 year MBA program like Cornell Tech. But would need more info to make a full evaluation.

Best,
Farrell

Hello all,

I am 32 years old Indian Mechanical Engineer working in middle east oil and gas industry for reputed American giant with about 10 years of experience. I have good engineering experience in operations and can take up senior technical roles but interested to pursue MBA and move to managerial or Techno-commercial side in energy business.

Now I am confused would really MBA help me if so should I opt European ? HEC or INSEAD or any other ?

Profile: As mentioned earlier I am a mechanical engineer and pursued distance MBA from India (not a high % guy but makes decent $144k every year)

Thanks for your time

Hi there, it appears that you first need to get clarity if MBA will truly help you get where you want to go. Moving from a tech to managerial role is often a good reason, but if you want to stay within the same company, see if you can get promoted through lateral hire?

MBA is a big investment of time and money, esp. the full-time programs. Unless you really want to switch careers, geographies, a full-time program might not be the best value for you.

One good way to start would be to talk to people who are in the roles you aspire for. Ask them how they reached there and if MBA will really help you. Once you are sure you want to do an MBA, then start looking at what schools would be good fit for you.

EU schools are more open to older applicants, but also consider the added factors related to lost wages, work authorization, relocation etc.

Good luck!

Well dude,
Form what you have written here, It seems like an MBA can get you where you want to be. European MBAs do make sense as you are a bit older, and maybe it would also be better for you to do a one-year program rather than sign up for two years at this point in your career. But you should also look into the schools from which Gas and Oil recruit - For sure Rice and McCombs in the US, but there are others too for sure that are slipping my mind.

If you haven't taken your GMAT yet, well, now would be the time to start :)

Best,
JF

Hi Venkatesh,

The fact that you already have an MBA will hurt your chances at top schools. Having said that, you should highlight the fact that this was a distance MBA - meaning you did not really get the classroom and networking opportunities a top-quality MBA is known for.

An MBA can help you establish reputation with your professional contacts. It will teach you some skills that can help you function more effectively in your role, especially if you are looking to take on commercial responsibilities. US or European MBAs should be fine - this is more determined by where you see yourself working in. Your GMAT score will be an important determinant to finalise your choice of schools.

Feel free to reach out to us if you have any questions.

Regards,
Karthik
