Apawar91
I'm a 26yo, male, Indian engineer (BITS Pilani) currently working as a Leveraged Finance banker in GS (based in Bangalore, travel frequently to London). Applied this year in R2 to Wharton, Chicago Booth and MIT Sloan. Got dings w/o interview at Wharton and Booth, currently awaiting MIT Sloan though not banking my hopes on it.
Below are the broad strokes of my profile, would be grateful for a review and would like to work with a consultant to understand which areas I need to improve on for R1 applications in September-18.
- BITS Pilani (B.E. Mechanical + M.Sc. Econ) - 7.35 / 10 GPA
- Total work-ex of c. 3 years+, all at bulge-brackets in India (JPMC, DB and currently GS) though no title progression
Hi Apawar91, First- I am sorry that you did not get the answer you wanted at Booth and Wharton-- just human to human here-- I know that this process is long, stressful and at times discouraging-- so I want to acknowledge this-- and now I will give you my thoughts-- although sometimes it is not YOU but just the odds are tough-- so I don't necessarily think there is a fatal flaw here. We do offer a very detailed ding analysis that we can do if you want to follow up on that-- link is here to learn more: https://stratusadmissionscounseling.com ... b-visitor/ and we do have some excellent counselors with Wharton and Booth insight. But let me address what I see from your profile here:- Lead clubs in undergrad
- Won awards at all my organizations
- Runner-up in Global Impact Fund challenge at GS
- GMAT 730 (49Q / 40V / 4 AWA / 7 IR)
- Certified FRM
Admittedly rushed the applications given schedule constraints but had (what I believed) put forth strong essays and LoRs.
My story was framed around getting into Impact Investing post MBA.
My biggest challenge currently is to understand which route to take -> do I move full-time to London (continuing with GS IBD but remain an Analyst) or do I jump to a non-profit oriented role to further my story? Also, does the Impact Investing story carry enough firepower to get into top B-schools?
I will be retaking the GMAT to push the score higher. Aiming for the same schools next year with maybe a couple more of the M7 (to present myself as a fresh applicant). Focused on US MBA only.
I have a client who was successful with impact investing at Wharton-- so it can be compelling. But the bigger question is approaching this not as what do they want to hear... but how can I express who I am? Your best story is the real story-- and it does not even have to be 100% baked. We discussed this very issue last year at AIGAC (the Association of International Graduate Admissions Consultants) and Frank DeVecchis- admissions director at Wharton even said that he was fine if applicants had one or two storylines they were pursuing and that he'd want to see how Wharton could help in either scenario. So don't approach this as some kind of puzzle where you will only be successful if you choose career path A in your application. Wharton is looking for students who are analytical, global, team players-- among other things. You need to look at the application and essays in particular as a way to let them see how you can uniquely add to their community. And a great application starts not in Sept in R1 but really NOW in going through some soul searching to make sure you are telling the most compelling stories in your wheelhouse, that you are researching how you could add value to Wharton and that you understand as best you can how the Wharton MBA will help you reach your career goals. This is not a quick answer-- but our Stratus process allows you to take a fresh look at what matters most to you-- and how you can become a three-dimensional applicant-- not just another piece of paper or another computer screen of information.
From what i see here-- I can say this-- people LIKE YOU are in the Wharton Class-- and while it is not easy nor guaranteed-- I do believe you could be compelling there or at Booth-- and if I spoke to you and learned more of your story and what you want to do-- I also think I could help you select some other M7 or top 10 where you might also be happy to have a broader approach to help you get the answer you seek in the next round. I like helping people like you-- those with the stats on paper to be competitive and just need to be creative in how you approach the application to make sure that when they read your story it is a story that only you can tell. If you want to do a free consult where I can explain more of our approach-- please reach out to me at this link:
https://stratusadmissionscounseling.com ... b-visitor/ and tell Brendan that you want to talk to Donna. Best wishes to you-- and I would say if anything another year will serve you well-- and at the moment I lean to London with GS IBD as I think that keeps the most doors open for now. But really I'd have to know more to confirm. Don't give up! Happy to connect bilaterally to discuss in detail.
