Going with the first split - When/with/due to/because/as a result..
... that [modifier], the turtles become...
B,C and E signifies that the turtles are with the fall weather turning cold.. or turtles are due to the fall weather turning cold.. same with "as a result" - eliminate B,C and E.
Going with the last split - dips/dipping : "dips" is a verb, while "dipping" is a participle, so what we need ? If we use "because" we need a clause to follow it, so eliminate D. In A, "dips" make what follows the "when" a clause - select A.

A gives the best combination of 'when' and 'the turtles become...' rather than using the participles in the other options.
