B) for plundering villages, to steal food, and kidnap children to take as soldiers and wives parallelism distorted by using to steal

C) for his plundering of villages, stealing food, and kidnapping children to be soldiers and wives incorrect

D) because he plundered villages, stealing food, and kidnapping children to take as soldiers and wives the use of because is redundant hence incorrect

E) for plundering villages, stealing food, and kidnapping children to take as soldiers and wives correct the list of plundering, stealing and kidnapping is appropriate with the use of to take rather than taking

Let's strike through the clutter so we have a clear view.

The newly established International Criminal Court brought charges against the warlord for plundering villages, stealing food, and the kidnapping of children for taking as soldiers and wives.

Brought charges for introduces a list here.

International criminal court brought charges for ( plundering villages, stealing food, and the kidnapping of children for taking as soldiers and wives)

Let's break it down

International criminal court brought charges for plundering villages, International criminal court brought charges for stealing food International criminal court brought charges for the kidnapping of children for taking as soldiers and wives

The third element in the list conveys a non-sensical meaning and isn't parallel to the other two.

As discussed above. Eliminate.

B) for plundering villages, to steal food, and kidnap children to take as soldiers and wives

International criminal court brought charges for(plundering villages, to steal food, and kidnap children to take as soldiers and wives)

International criminal court brought charges for plundering villages, International criminal court brought charges for to steal food, International criminal court brought charges for kidnap children to take as soldiers and wives OK. As you can see, the 2nd and the 3rd elements are messed up. We are not quite there.

C) for his plundering of villages, stealing food, and kidnapping children to be soldiers and wives

International criminal court brought charges for(his plundering of villages, stealing food, and kidnapping children to be soldiers and wives)

In the Second element here, This distorts the parallelism as well as the meaning.

D) because he plundered villages, stealing food, and kidnapping children to take as soldiers and wives

Let's break down this one.

The International criminal court brought charges because (he plundered villages, stealing food, and kidnapping children to take as soldiers and wives)

The International criminal court brought charges because he plundered villages , The International criminal court brought charges because stealing food & The International criminal court brought charges because kidnapping children to take as soldiers and wives

Really? Quite self-explanatory now is it not?

E) for plundering villages, stealing food, and kidnapping children to take as soldiers and wives

The International criminal court brought for( plundering villages, stealing food, and kidnapping children to take as soldiers and wives)

The International criminal court brought charges for plundering villages, The International criminal court brought charges for stealing food , The International criminal court brought charges for kidnapping children to take as soldiers and wives

Finally, we're settled.

I think the answer has to be E as it is the only option which has correct parallel structure and conveys the correct meaning.

B) for plundering villages, to steal food, and kidnap children to take as soldiers and wives

C) for his plundering of villages, stealing food, and kidnapping children to be soldiers and wives

D) because he plundered villages, stealing food, and kidnapping children to take as soldiers and wives

E) for plundering villages, stealing food, and kidnapping children to take as soldiers and wives

Although, i got this answer correct but aren't all three noun are parallel.

i mean all 3 are noun- plundering villages, stealing food, and the kidnapping of children

i eliminated A because for purpose we use "to". what is the the purpose of kidnapping children.

Just want to confirm can't we consider these three things to be parallel if "for taking" error is put aside.

"D) because he plundered villages, stealing food, and kidnapping children to take as soldiers and wives

Really? Quite self-explanatory now is it not?"

I have a query in this, since plundering itself signifies "stealing with force", why are we again using "stealing foods and kidnapping childred......wives", does it not creates redundancy?

Also if i am not wrong in option d it says "Because he plundered villages, (in that he was) stealing foods and kidnapping children......wives". Here "stealing foods......wives" is defining his act of plundering.

I too agree that E is the correct option but Option D also gives the same meaning w/o error.

Can you please explain.

GMATNinja ,generis would like your opinions too on this.

Option D has an incorrect parallel structure.

The newly established International Criminal Court brought charges against the warlord because he plundered villages, stealing food & kidnapping children to take as soldiers and wife

Apart from the parallelism error in this choice, It appears as though the appositive/ verb-ing modifier stealing is modifying the action in the previous clause, telling us more about how he plundered the villages. So this choice distorts the meaning completely.

Hope this helps :)

Abhi077 exactly my point, but my confusion is in the redundant part in option E "plundering villages, stealing food, & kidnapping.....wives", since plundering and stealing typically means the same.

No, they don't exactly mean the same. you can say that plundering is a type of stealing which involves violence or force. plundering villages in this context means violent and dishonest acquisition of village property.

Stealing on the other hand is normal theft, it may or may not involve violence or force.

They are both used in different contexts to convey different meanings and so their usage together isn't redundant.

Hope this clears your doubt. :)
