With jobless claims falling and the stock market gaining more than 10% in the last few months (based on the stock market index), many pundits are saying that the economy is entering a phase of recovery and possible growth. However, their conclusion is wrong and misleading. The number of college graduates living back at home with their parents has increased every month for the last six months and parents are reporting they've been busier than they have been in years accomodating their now "grown" children.

Which of the following is an assumption on which the argument depends?

(A)Stock market gains are not useful indicators of economic recovery.

(B)Economic growth cannot be measured in terms of falling jobless claims.

C is perfect :  Legislation has not been recently passed to give those who live at home with parents a free monthly voucher worth $500 each. 
in making the conclusion (the one that has been made in the argument) the writer is assuming that there is no ulterior motive as why so many graduated are living with their parents 
also if u negate C then we get an alternative reason and that destroys the conclusion !!

Had the question asked to strengthen or weaken then this option could have been apt, but taking it as an assumption would mean assuming a lot..

premise- no of grad living with parents increasing

conclusion- economy is in the recovery phase and sign of possible growth is FALSE

missing assumption is if college grad living with parents, they are unemployed

CHOICE C suggests the unemployment part indrectly

None of the explanations are helpful, unfortunately. If the correct answer is C then all what those GMAT tutors say are nothing but nonsense. Answer E sounds more reasonable to me.

I think the key for this question is   not necessary means  .
For example,   could be a result of government incentive , which is described in (C).
So in order for the author to be correct, the author must assume there is no other factors causing the fresh grads to move back with their parents.

Could someone please explain the OA? 2 reasons were used by pundits to claim that economy is rising. However, argument chooses to attack 1 of those reasons - jobless claims falling. If we negate the reason in choice B, shouldn't conclusion fall apart?

Contra View -

Number of college graduates staying back at home ( with their parents ) increased in last 6 months
parent becoming Busier than ever accommodating grown children, increased in last 6 months

Conclusion of the Pundits " Economy is entering recovery phase " is not true.

( Thousand Thanks to Egmat for the strategy )... College Grads are sitting at home not by force but by choice, ( May be they are working from home or something like that .......) None but option (C) matches our pre thinking...

Misleading word confirms that something is missed in concluding the situation. The missing part is getting vouchers. If vouchers are included then decrease in jobless claims will be wrong. Government is giving money for the people to survive that is making to not to claim for jobless claims and does not means economic growth.

Answer is C because if we negate C: children are not moving back home because they are jobless, they are moving back because they are getting vouchers for doing so. Nice chunk of money.
