Rene earns $8.50 per hour on days other than Sundays and twice that rate on Sundays. Last week she worked a total of 40 hours, including 8 hours on Sunday. What were her earnings for the week?

(A) $272
(B) $340
(C) $398
(D) $408
(E) $476

Given that Rene worked 40 - 8 = 32 hrs @ $8.50/hour on weekdays except Sunday & Rene worked for 8 hrs @ $17.00/hr on Sunday
So, total earnings for the week was 32* $8.5 + 8 * $17 = 16*$17 + 8 * $17= 24*$17 = $408

Answer: (D)

1 hr of Sunday work = 2 hrs of regular day work.
Total of 48 hrs (32 hrs. Mon-Sat + 16 equivalent hrs. on Sunday) at $8.50/hour

48*8.50=408

Only one calculation this way.

I hope a one line solution for this question is
Total amount($)=Time(in Hour)* Wage (in $/hour)
8*17+32*8.5=136+272=408 $

Basic calculation is 32 * 8.5 and 8*17. Lets say you are in hurry and you have 30 secs on the clock.
we can calculate 32 * 17/2 = 16 * 17 and 8 * 17 .
6*7 ends in 2 and 8*7 ends in 6 so the answer ends in 8. Eliminate A/B/E. You just increased the probability by 30% points to 50%. Take a pick and move on.
So try not to click randomly in case of time pressure. Take a calculated guess, doesn't take more than 30 secs including reading the question.

For proper calculation:
16*17 + 8*17 = 256 + 16 + 80 + 56 = 408 - Option D)

Option D.
Total wages=Total hours * hourly wage rate
=>32 * 8.50 + 8 * 17
What I did to solve this is:
32 * 8 + 32 *0.5 +17 * 8
16 + (32+17)*8
16 + 49 * 8
16 + 400 - 8
408

Since she earned double on Sunday(8 hours) 40+8 * 8.5 =408.

1 step calculation can be:
Since working on Sunday is equal to double pay i.e. 8hrs = 16hr pay
total hours =40
Take it as 48hrs total into $8.5 = $408

1. Total Hours - Sunday Hours = 40 - 8 = 32
2. 32 x $8.50 = $272.00
3. 8.5 x 2 = $17.00/hour on Sunday
4. $17.00 x 8 = $136.00
5. $272.00 + $136.00 = $408.00

Answer is (D) $408

Rene earned 32 x 8.5 = 272 dollars during the week (except Sunday) and 8 x 17 = 136 dollars on Sunday.

So he earned a total of 272 + 136 = 408 dollars last week.
