I voted for UT - did not seem the difference between the two schools/programs was that meaningful to justify $70K esp if you are not thrilled about NYC or Boston perhaps? Most of the Yale network is there or at least most folks choose to stay there.

Keep in mind that your goals/priorities are likely to change when you graduate and you will have a different set of goals (at least slightly) and a different perspective. Though $70K is not huge when you look at a cost of a condo/apartment in NYC, it is meaningful when you are not working for 2 years and then potentially starting a family.

Yes, Yale is likely to get a better spot for MBB/Boston area consulting companies but they will all be around the NE area. It seems with your profile, you may as successfully stand out in TX compared to other consulting recruits (MBB's likely recruit some folks out of TX but spots are limited so you have perhaps as good of a chance there being a better-positioned candidate), and yes, Austin has become a tech capital of the South or anything outside of Bay Area.

Thanks for the replies so far. Seems like public opinion is split evenly--just how I feel internally.

One factor that I've been contemplating over the past couple days is how generous the Yale loan repayment program is for government/non-profits/b corps. Could give me a bit of flexibility to transition back into those sectors and not worry about debt loads.

Would love to hear any other advice.

If you haven't decided on where you'd like to settle and raise your family and would like to have national and global mobility, consider enrolling at Yale. Even if you haven't decided on settling, working in NYC or Boston at a solid gig will still give you plenty of options down the road - especially internationally.

If you are truly in love with Austin, McCombs should be the easy choice here.

I would go with UT given some of your personal preferences on the professional side you should eb able to secure a consulting gig in Texas not sure it will be exclusively in Austin however but given the money I think I'm leaning towards UT for you

Yale recruiting stats into Texas have increased in the past few years, so don't think you will be the only one aiming for Texas post-MBA. I've seen consulting, o&g (of course), and tech to name a few for both summer interns and full-time placements.

Happy to connect you to either Texans and their recruiting processes and/or other Pton Woodrow Wilson alums (you're likely in touch already though) who incidentally can also discuss LDRs to New Haven with you.

Hey youarefree,

Congrats on your acceptance to two great schools! I thought I'd throw my hat in and lend you my thoughts.

First off money. Money is always a concern, but I'd recommend looking at it from the long-run. $70K is a significant amount in the short-term, but your B-School education is an investment and just like any investment, you should look at its trajectory and ability to deliver ROI.

You mentioned that you're interested in consulting and my recollection is that SOM is one of six business schools that is a core school for all MBB.

I think that SOM has a stronger consulting game and gives you is additional flexibility and a wider network:

McComb has 30% of alums going into consulting, with a a $130 median salary, and 64% of alums in the South West US.

SOM has 38% of alums going into consulting, with a $135K median salary, and 3.6% of alums in the South West US.

Even if your heart is set on TX, having a wide network is critical, and just like aerien said, if you're at SOM and want to head to TX, you'll have a great Yale community there - one of my closest friends from first year is in Houston at Shell, and loves it!

An additional critical component, from my perspective, is your partner! SOM has a very strong Partners club, partners can join the healthcare plan, and take classes anywhere throughout the university. If you'd like me to put you and your partner in touch with some folks, I'd be more than happy to!

Finally, if you'd like to talk with a current student, I'd be happy to chat - feel free to just pm me!

I just turned 32 last week and some people (including an admission adviser) told me that MBB doesn't really recruit old(er) candidates or probably very few. Not sure if this is true but you might want to think it over
