Hello GMATClub members,

This is my first post here. Really need your helps to pick school.

I just got the results of all the schools I applied to in the previous batch, and thankfully, the majority of them are excellent offers. After much deliberation, I narrowed my choices down to two: Indiana University (Kelley) and Arizona State University (W.P. Carey).
I'd like to tell you a little about myself, so you can give me some advice. I have 5 years of experience in public accounting and corporate finance, and I plan to major in Business Analytics for my MBA. Because of the industry development trends in my country, I am interested in the Ecommerce and Tech Start-up industries.

I weighed these two options based on a few factors, which I will list in order of importance below:

Financial Aid: (vote for Carey)
W. P. Carey provided me with a full scholarship; Kelley provided me with a partial scholarship, leaving me with ~$30K for tuition. I also received a GA offer from Carey, but I might get it in Kelley if I apply, so GA will not count here.

Ranking: (vote for Kelley)
Kelley has a slight lead. While Kelley is ranked higher in the 2023 US FT MBA ranking (22 vs 29), Carey is ranked higher in the MBA Business Analytics ranking (13 vs `unknown for Kelley but pretty sure it's after 13`)

Career Service + Alumni Network: (vote for Kelley)
People say Kelley has a strong CMC and a large alumni network. I honestly don't have enough information to compare this to Carey, but I sensed the program's interest in students during Kelley's initial orientation.

Location: (vote for Carey)
Despite its reputation for hot, dry weather, especially in the summer, I find excited to live in Phoenix than in Bloomington.

Please let me know your thoughts.
Thank you in advance! :heart

Hello USmba22516,

Congratulations on the admits!

While Kelley is a great brand, especially keeping in mind the USNews + FT MBA rankings, Carey has an edge when it comes to the MBA (Business Analytics) rankings. Besides, the full scholarship works in favor of Carey, as well.

Good to know you are keen on Carey; it is a good decision! :-)

Good luck!

Congratulations on your admits.

It is often a difficult task to choose between the options because there’s so much additional uncertainty based on chance and opportunity. Based on what you have said, I probably wouldn’t worry too much about the ranking differential. In the current economic situation and based on your priorities, it’s not as important here.

I will be curious to see what you really think about the summer in Phoenix. 😂

Thank all of you guys very much for your kind advice.

To answer bb's curiosity, I come from a tropical country near the equator, so I'm used to the heat. I know Phoenix summers have days that go up to 45 degrees Celsius. But I'm sure my body will feel more comfortable on a scorching hot day than on a snowy day.

bb: As you said the ranking differential is no longer important, so would you mind telling me what is really important in the current economic situation? Thank you so much.

Be able to interview well.
Have strong presentation skills
Have good interpersonal and networking skills.
It helps have a brand on your resume.

PS. There is not a huge differential between these two school brands. They are both in the top 20-30 group with one being closer to top 20 and one closer to top 30…. 😇
