Has anybody talked to anybody that was waitlisted last year? I received the email on Thursday with details about the waitlist but based on last year's thread, it was kind of a nightmare. Hoping for something better this year.

What I have heard is that Wharton's WL has quite some rotation, i.e. it is reasonable to expect some good outcome :)

I haven't read last year's thread, but in any case, it is good that they will let us know by March 30, 2017. At least that is what is on the e-mail.
How was timing last year? Any ideas if they provided a deadline as well?

If you skim the thread last year, you can see how bad it was. People were kept in the dark, updates were vague (i.e., "We same some movement, you should expect to see an update by XYZ date", then on that date, a similar "This happened, you'll get an update by XYZ date".)

Again, based on the thread from last year, it doesn't look like anybody here actually got in from the waitlist. Obviously a small sample size (just GMAT club members), but it's the only somewhat reliable source of information I have found. Some people were re-put on the waitlist and did not hear back until June/July with rejections.

Re-put on the waitlist? That is awful and seems quite weird.

Well, I have spoken to a couple of friends in the past days and several know people who got in last year from the WL.
I assume that it will depend a lot on geography/cohorts anyways, so any perspective from last year's movements might be biased

Absolutely agree, however, I don't have any friends to speak to :) so I rely on the only information that I have available.

Certainly hoping that you are right and I'm wrong! Time will tell, I assume we'll get another update from William in February as the R1 deposits are due.

Dos and Don’ts for Wharton Waitlisters by Scott Edinburgh, Wharton alumnus and MBA admission consultant.

  • Email the admissions office if you have a substantial update to provide. (i.e. a new job, a promotion, a higher GMAT score).
  • Wharton really likes a lack of contact. Contact them only if you have a substantial update. OR if you have someone powerful who can write a letter on your behalf. Otherwise you should sit tight and wait.
  • Don’t email the office to reiterate your interest in applying and tell them how excited you are.
  • Don’t have another recommender write another letter (with some exceptions).
  • Don’t ask them for updates. They will update you when they have an update.

How to Get Off the MBA Waitlist - YouTube Live by GMAT Club and Personal MBA Coach.

Dear Waitlisted Applicants,
You put a lot of time and effort into your MBA applications and, after months of hard work, you’re…waiting. It’s ok to scream into a pillow or go to town on a punching bag. It’s frustrating! But after you do, sign up for this youtube live session hosted by Scott Edinburgh, Founder of Personal MBA Coach. He'll talk about the process, the stats, do's and don'ts, and what has worked for his clients in the past. He'll wrap everything up with a live Q&A session. You don't want to miss this!

About Scott Edinburgh

A Wharton MBA graduate with a BS from MIT, Scott has been an MBA admissions consultant for eight years and has helped hundreds of applicants around the world get into top MBA programs. Besides perfecting the MBA admissions process and making dreams come true for applicants from Tokyo to San Francisco and everywhere in between, he has also worked across consulting, financial services and strategy & corporate development roles before becoming a Full-Time admissions consultant. He ran Global Strategy / Corporate Development as a Director of a 700 person leading independent publishing company. He also worked for InterContinental Hotels Group in Global Strategy, as well as JP Morgan and Deloitte Consulting in Mergers & Acquisitions. His experience in many of the jobs applicants have today or hope to obtain post-MBA helps him advise them on the best ways to not only get into their top choice schools, but position themselves for their dream jobs.

As an individual MBA admissions consultant, he takes the time to get to know every client personally as they go through the journey together. This starts with a deep analysis into applicant's background, an identification of his/her objectives and a thorough development of personal story. His no BS approach ensures that nothing falls through the cracks and his feedback is honest, non-sugar coated and immediate. He push his clients very hard and the work pays off. 96% of his clients got into one of their top two or three schools. He works with applicants applying to full-time MBA programs as well as Executive and part-time MBA programs.

Waitlisted Round 2 as well..The official instructions seem to suggest minimal contact from the applicant..Is that strictly recommended ? Additionally, still trying to understand the odds of waitlisted international applicants getting through post Round 2. Appreciate any help on this. Thanks!

Hello fellow waitlisters, this has been a quiet thread. Did anyone hear any news or insights? Will some movement / offers come out before the 9th?

Hi Sanghar, I know they just had R2 admitted student weekend this past Friday through Sunday, so if I had to guess they'll see what the yield looks like from R2 before making any decisions. Not sure what that means though in terms of waiting until R3 decisions on the 9th or not

Hey Conte - a lot of MBA admissions committees say that they don't want extra communications from applicants (probably just to cut down on the mail they receive), but if you actually ask them in person many will tell you that they would be very unlikely to admit someone who has not kept in contact with them. Wharton in particular is pretty receptive to update letters and will send you emails of confirmation when they get and read them.

My strong advice is to definitely send updates to the Adcom, but to do so in a way that clarifies your narrative and shows improvement -- improvement that ideally happened since you applied, like promotions, awards, etc. These don't have to be very long and certainly not frequent. There is an art to writing letters that are cogent and confident not rambling, annoying or desperate.

FYI, We just got a Conquer the Waitlist client into Wharton off the waitlist last week. I think his batch of 3-5 will be one of, if not the last batch to be let in (sometimes they go right up until the week classes start)

If anyone else in Waitlist Land is struggling to understand what went wrong and what they should do now, I'd recommend the following two posts, which capture a lot of the approach that we have used in getting clients into Wharton off the waitlist for the past two cycles now.
