I don't think I'm really a Harvard type personality. Not to mention I think it would be quite a challenge to get into. Stanford would be great, but I've accepted that it's a pipe dream. I also don't want to go to school in NYC - too many distractions and high cost, so Columbia is out.
Although my stats are good, I know I have weakness that will hold me back. No international experience, weak leadership experience, and a so-so undergrad institution.
I'm worried about being considered as another boring candidate, as I don't travel much, rock climb, run marathons, etc. I like going to football games, basketball games, tailgating, and doing some misc hobbies. Do schools accept people like that anymore?
Dabots - I think you would be a great candidate for any school including Harvard. I don't think a lack of international experience is really a weakness. I also don't think you should be worried about your undergraduate institution, especially if it's NOT located in the Northeast. I believe one of the forum members (Brown) was accepted to Harvard and he said that his "hook" was that he was from the midwest or somewhere out west.
You say you have strong undergrad extra-curriculars, I think this will mitigate your lack of leadership. Plus, as a younger candidate the lack of leadership is more understandable.
I think the more you get involved in the application process the more you will realize that you are underestimating your candidacy.
The list of schools you chose is a great list, but I would consider adding Stanford and Harvard because they like younger applicants like yourself.
