(A) x/2

(B) 2x

(C)(x + 2)/6

(D) x + 2

Average = (x + 2x + 6)/3
= (3x + 6)/3
= x + 2
= D

Another approach is to use the INPUT-OUTPUT method.

Choose an arbitrary value for x and see what the average becomes.

Try x = 0
So, the three values are: 0, 2(0) and 6
In other words, the 3 values are 0, 0, and 6
So, the average = (0 + 0 + 6)/3 = 2
So, when x = 0 (the INPUT), the average of the three numbers (the OUTPUT) is 2

Now we'll plug x = 0 into the answer choices to see which one yields an OUTPUT of 2
(A) x/2 = 0/2 = 0. No match. ELIMINATE A

(B) 2x = (2)(0) = 0. No match. ELIMINATE B

(C)(x + 2)/6 = (0 + 2)/6 = 2/6 = 1/3. No match. ELIMINATE C

(D) x + 2 = 0 + 2 = = 2. Match. KEEP D

(E)(x + 2)/3 = (0 + 2)/3 = 2/3. No match. ELIMINATE E

Answer: D
