I don't think in an essay we have a thesis - more likely an introduction. It should address the topic of the essay, and present some general directions to "where the whole essay goes".

I think that every essay needs thesis statement to "help organize and develop the system of proper writing". The more detail about thesis statements is explained here:

Thesis statements help writers focus on the point and avoid going too far from the point. Thesis statements help readers easily understand the main point and follow the whole ideas.
