(1) (|x| - 1)(x - 2) = 0

(2) -1 ≤ x ≤ 1

S1) x = -1,1,2
Insufficient

S2) -1 ≤ x ≤ 1
x can be any value between -1 & 1.
Insufficient.

S1+S2)
x = -1,1
Insufficient.

E is the answer.

Both together x should be 1 only because the statement 1 is satisfied with it and not with 0 or -1. So why not "C"?

What is the value of x ?

(1) (|x| - 1)(x - 2) = 0;

(|x| - 1) = 0 or (x - 2) = 0;

If (|x| - 1) = 0, then |x| = 1, so x = -1 or x = 1.
If (x - 2) = 0, then x = 2.

So, from this statement x could be -1, 1, or 2. Not sufficient.

(2) -1 ≤ x ≤ 1. Not sufficient.

(1)+(2) Two values of x satisfy both statements: x = -1 and x = 1. Not sufficient.

Answer: E.
