I agree with the first post about indicating that Columbia is a top choice but that you will be applying to other programs and would appreciate his support across the board. I would just downplay any sort of ranking or favoritism. It's not really all that relevant for this recommender unless he asks for that type of sort of commitment.

Let's assume you get into both HBS and Columbia, or Columbia and another top program, this is your decision! You should not pick your second choice simply because you don't want to disappoint someone. You are making no guarantees to your recommender that if you get into Columbia you will attend. You are simply asking him to help you maximize your chances in the process. As long as you don't make a guarantee "if accepted, I will attend" or worse, applying ED and backing out, you would not be doing something that would be unethical, iresponsible or disrespectful.
