y varies with x gives y = QX, where Q is a constant.

Sub the numbers in to solve for Q, 2 = 4Q, hence Q = 1/2

Solving for y: y = (1/2)(3/2), hence y = 3/4

y varies directly as the square of x. When x = 4, y = 2. What is the value of y when x = 3/2?

A. 9/32
B. 3/4
C. 16/3
D. 128/9
E. 7/2

Letting k = the constant of variation, we can create the direct variation equation:

y = kx^2

When x = 4, y = 2, we have:

2 = 16k

1/8 = k

Therefore, when x = 3/2, we have:

y = (1/8)(9/4) = 9/32
