Hi everyone,

I just took my first official GMAT last Saturday(June 29th, 2019) and I scored a 640 (33V 45Q 5AWA 5 IR).

I was pretty disappointed with my score because I have been hardcore studying since February( 2-3 hours on weekdays and 5 hours Sat and Sun each). Unfortunately leading up to my exam I was scoring in the range of 620-690 on my practice exams so my actual GMAT exam wasn’t that surprising.

I want to retake my exam in November before Thanksgiving and I am aiming for 720+. Do you think 3.5 months is enough time to jump from 640 to 720? What additional resources or strategy tips do you all reccomend?

Resources:
Target test Prep(95% completion)
Magoosh Premium
Manhattan Prep SC
Manhattan Prep CR
Manhattan Prep RC

Practice Exams used:
GMAC 5 out of 6. Avg. 650
Kaplan(1) 690
Manhattan(1) 650

My goals:
720+ on Gmat
Going to a M7 MBA Program( I don’t plan on applying until a couple years but would still like to get my score out of the way)

Weaknesses:
Geometry
Idioms
Reading comprehension
Work/Rate
Trouble getting high accuracy in Hard questions

Posted from my mobile device

For Geometry and Word Problems(Work/Rate) try with TTP or eGMAT questions especially Hard questions.

I would suggest you should get in touch with TTT guys (Jeff/Scott) .Since you have done their course ,you can share you score/ESR with them and
I guess they can provide you best inputs for improvement.

Apart from the what Kiran suggested, focus more time on deeply analyzing the problems and pick up say topics (your weak areas)
and solve plenty questions from gmat club tags(say solve 600 level first and then 700) till you become you really comfortable with the topic.

Hope it helps !! :)

Hi eosin,

640 is not a bad start, especially considering that you were averaging 650 on your official practice exams. The good news is that you have a pretty decent quant score. However, since your score goal is 720, you likely need to push for Q48+. To improve your quant skills, you should go back through the TTP course from the beginning and do various chapter tests to determine your remaining weak areas. As you uncover those weaknesses, go back to the chapters and read through the necessary lessons, which will address those weaknesses. By following this process, you’ll ensure that you methodically fill in gaps in your quant knowledge, and thus improve your quant skills.

Regarding verbal, your score of 33 is a sign that you lack the fundamental verbal skills you need for a high score, right? Thus, moving forward, you need to follow a study plan that allows you to individually learn each verbal topic, and then practice each topic until you’ve gained mastery.

Certainly, if you’d like more specific advice on how to improve your verbal skills, feel free to reach out. Also, you may find it helpful to read this article about The Phases of Preparing for the GMAT.

If you have any further questions regarding your plan, feel free to reach out to me directly. Let’s do this!!

Hi eosin,

To start, a 640/Q45 is a solid performance - and it shows that you know most of the Quant and Verbal content fairly well - but there are some 'weak spots' in your use of Tactics and how you organize your work. Since you're interested in some highly-competitive Programs, it would make sense for you to retest (although this Score - along with a strong OVERALL profile - could be enough to get you into some of those Programs). You might choose to purchase the Enhanced Score Report. While the ESR doesn’t provide a lot of information, there are usually a few data points that we can use to define what went wrong on Test Day (and what you should work on to score higher). If you purchase the ESR, then I'll be happy to analyze it for you.

Before I can offer you the specific advice that you’re looking for, it would help if you could provide a bit more information on how you've been studying and your timeline:

1) How have you scored on EACH of your CATs/mocks (including the Quant and Verbal Scaled Scores for EACH)?
2) What application deadlines are you currently considering?
3) Going forward, how many hours do you think you can consistently study each week?

GMAT assassins aren't born, they're made,
Rich

Hi eosin

Welcome to GMAT club.

To start with 640 is not a bad score.

firstly don't get discouraged by this attempt. You can find lots of stories, on gmatclub, in which people have achieved their dream score in subsequent attempts.

For Quant, I would suggest you go thru Manhattan Quant guides and couple them with GMAT club tests.

For verbal, I would suggest you enroll for egmat.
