Hi jaw93,

To start, a 660 is a fantastic initial CAT Score (the average score on the Official GMAT hovers around 540-550 most years). Assuming that you took this CAT in a realistic fashion that 'matches up' with how you will face Test Day, then you could very easily hit your score goal with just another month of consistent, guided study.

Based on these Scaled Scores, you could pick up all of the points that you're looking for in either the Quant or the Verbal sections, but many Schools view the Quant Scaled Score as a measure of how an applicant might handle the 'academic side' of the Program - so raising that Score would likely help you in more ways than one. From what you described, one of your issues is that you need to learn (or relearn) certain Quant concepts that you haven't seen in years, so it's possible that you could learn/practice all of that on your own. However, if you want to be efficient about this process - and not have to try to figure out all of the Tactics, patterns and little 'secrets' to the GMAT by yourself, then you would likely benefit from investing in a GMAT Course of some type.

1) When are you planning to take the GMAT?
2) Going forward, how many hours do you think you can consistently study each week?

The way you took the Veritas CAT without much study, you should really take GMATPrep CAT (two CATs free) to see where you already are without any prep.

By the way 660 is really good with no study. i do not think that you're any far from 710. I just doubt Q43 a little. so you take GMATPrep CAT first :)

There are people who have gotten the good score in 1-2 month of study. Yes there are many online courses available. A little research on the forum/google should help you with that.

More queries are welcomed :)

I will take the GMATclub CATs this week to see if my baseline performance is consistent. However, I'm not sure why the Q43 is unbelievable, its a ~50th percentile score

I suggested - As you need to check where do you stand already, you need to take GMATPrep CAT. Other CATs will not give you the right picture.

Scoring Algorithm of GMAC is really complex and different. CATs provided by other TestPrep Companies cannot be considered when you really need to gauge your performance.

GMATClub Quant CATs are tougher than GMAC's Quant. so the score you'll get might not be very aligned with the one you're likely to get on real GMAT test.

Take GMATPrep first :)

Rich,

thanks for the detailed response!

Right now I am looking at an Aug 3rd test date. unfortunately I can't take it any later than that without it interfering with school. I can reasonably dedicate 20-25 hours a week. How many hours of studying do you recommend someone gets in before the test?

Hi jaw93,

While it might be tempting to think of your studies in terms of "quantity", the more relevant issue is the "quality" of your study (and the study materials that you work with). With an August 3rd Test Date, you have about 5 weeks of study time - and you could potentially improve a great deal in that time if you focus on developing the proper skills.

While I would agree that it would be a good idea for you to take one of the Official GMAC CATs next (in a manner that 'matches up' with Test Day), the idea that the GMAC CATs are the only ones that provide an accurate score result is incorrect. The CATs available from Kaplan, MGMAT and Veritas are all 'close enough' to the real thing that they will provide a reasonably accurate score result (assuming that you take the CAT in a realistic fashion).

After reviewing each section of this CAT, how many questions did you get wrong....
1) Because of a silly/little mistake?
2) Because there was some math/verbal that you just could not remember how to do?
3) Because the question was too hard?
4) Because you were low on time and had to guess?
