730 GMAT Prep and Test Experience (Tips and Free Advice)
Hello People,
I have been following this forum for a while and I think this is my first Post! Here is why I took the GMAT, How I prepared and took the test!
I was working in a Multinational Oil & Gas company in Canada for the last 5 years and was stuck at a job with no progress (even after completing the in-house standard training/testing program and achieving professional engineering status).I was starting to think about business school and a consulting career with technical (energy) focus.
I grew up in India, moved out after my undergrad and spent some time travelling and working in the US before moving to Canada. Did my masters here in Petroleum Engineering and worked full-time since.
Having made it through 3 rounds of layoffs at the company and surviving in a team that went from 30 to 3, I was feeling pretty confident and secure about my job.
Last October (2016), to my surprise, I got laid off with a good severance package! So, I thought it is now or never to Travel the World or take the GMAT! I put my travelling plans of hold for now (after booking trips to Vietnam, California, Turkey and France haha! - checkout website called secretflying for unbelievable deals guys - u r welcome!) and started prepping for GMAT!
Here is my Timeline:
Started prepping for GMAT second half of October (~3hrs a day)
Material 1:
Manhattan GMAT Quant
Manhattan GMAT Verbal
Break 1:
Went Solo backpacking to Vietnam First half of November (Great Experience!!)
Material 2:
PowerScore GMAT Critical Reasoning Bible (Noticed great improvement in CR!)
Official Guide 2017
Booked Test date December 20, 2016
Practice Tests:
Official GMAT Prep Test 1: 710
Official GMAT Prep Test 2: 740
Actual Test Experience(December 20, 2016):
I think I either panicked or lost sense of time or both, did not have time to answer last 5-8 questions in both quant and verbal sections!
Score: 640 (was extremely disappointed, so cancelled my score)
Break 2:
Took a long road trip from Calgary, Canada (where I live) to San Fransisco, USA through Oregon Coast 101 and California 101/1 with wife and dog for 3 weeks and got back home mid jan 2017! Was exhausted from the road trip of a lifetime (~7000 kms thats right!) and did not start prepping till feb 1st week.
Material 3:
Official Guide Quant Review 2017
Official Guide Verbal Review 2017
Booked test date Feb 22, 2017
Practice tests:
Veritas Tests 650, 670, 690, 670, 660
Was scoring high in Verbal (79-89 percentile)But was very disappointed with my performance in Quant (59-65 percentile). Especially with High School education from India and Engineering background! I think Veritas quant is tougher than GMAT quant!
Material 4:
Manhattan GMAT Quant (refresh) -
Official Guide 2013 (quant) to improve quant score
Practice test:
Official GMAT Prep Test 2: 700 (took it day before actual test)
Actual Test:
Made sure I was calm and composed and said to myself 'do your best and don't worry too much about the result'
Chose European schools to send my score! Trump effect?? I think mostly to do with my preference to global 1 yr programs and my age (wrong side of 30 by a year)
I think I did a great job with AWA, would be surprised if I don't score 6 or 5
Had starting trouble with IR section, blanked out for some reason but managed to compose myself after IR break IR Score 3
Had a good feeling during the test as I was seeing difficult questions throughout the test!
Scored Q48 (71 Percentile) V42 (96 Percentile) Total 730 (96 Percentile)
Other things I did that I think helped!
Made sure I was active during my prep days by playing Volleyball, Badminton, Dodgeball and Hiking/snowshoeing in the Rocky Mountains close by once a week.
Took every opportunity to be social meeting friends for weekend events, poker nights, etc.
Watched TV Shows: Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood (WOW- I think it changed my life!) , Koffee with Karan (great entertainment especially for my fellow Indian peeps)
Youtube Channels: Handicapping Your Elite MBA Odds, VOX, CrashCourse, Emergency Awesome, New Rockstars
Video Games: Fifa on PS4, Miniclip Pool, Zynga Poker on phone
Board Games: Scrabble (lost to wifey most of the time)
Played fetch with my dog Bouncer twice a day and took her out to parks every 2 days (check her out on insta! bouncer_gsd )
Got a good nights sleep before test!
Took 2 bananas and Gatorade as snacks during test breaks.
