Hi All,

The answers to this questions are really 'spread out', which is a clue that you don't have to do precise calculations to get to the correct answer.

We're told that a car travels 345 miles in 15 hours. We're then asked, if the car maintained that same average speed, how long would it take to travel 69 miles?

IF... we 'round up' 345 miles to 350 miles...
and... we 'round up' 69 miles to 70 miles...

...then we end up traveling 1/5 of the total distance - which means that we'll end up traveling about 1/5 of the total time. 1/5 of 15 hours = 3 hours.

Final Answer:
GMAT assassins aren't born, they're made,

69* 5 miles = 15 Hours, Since ( 345=69*5)
69 miles = 15/5 hours = 3 hours.

We don't need to do calculation actually. Since 69 miles is less than 345 miles, so the answer cannot be more than 15. Fortunately, there is only one anwer which less than 15.

A car that travels 345 miles in 15 hours would complete a journey of 69 miles in how many hours if it traveled at the same average speed?

A. 1,587
B. 600
C. 230
D. 23
E. 3

The average speed of the car is 345/15 = 23 mph. Thus, it would take it 69/23 = 3 hours to travel 69 miles.

Alternative solution:

Since it takes the car 15 hours to travel 345 miles, it must take it less than 15 hours travel 69 miles. The only answer choice that is less than 15 is choice E, which is 3.

Answer: E
