Is the $$\sqrt{x}$$ a prime number?

(1) x = 9 or -9

This has more to do with how DS works and if you are suppose to work from question stem to answers or answer to question stem. Is statement (1) sufficient?

Do you just assume x=9 since you can not take the square root of -9, thus x can only equal 9 and the square root of 9 is 3 (a prime number).
- OR -
do you assume since x can also be -9 and you can not take the square root of a negative number, thus $$\sqrt{-9}$$ is not valid and thus can not equal a prime number, thus statement 1 is not sufficent

Statement 1 is not sufficient since it gives us both yes and no
