I had the GMAT online test last week and my scores came out low as expected. I fell ill a few days before the test and I couldn't reschedule because I had to meet the deadline and my exam leave would have been up so I kind of had no option but to write it. I hoped I would be better at the day of the test but while writing it, I felt really week and couldn't concentrate. Honestly, all that was on my mind at the time was to get it over with and go lie down somewhere. I did poorly in the quant and IR section because when I tried to think, I felt worse so I just answered what I could knowing I was going to get a low score.
Is it okay to address this is the additional essay section? I'm hoping my professional experience and other essays would help a bit but I honestly couldn't do much at the time. If I register for another exam, I'll miss the deadline and I doubt my office would want to give me time off again as I have a lot of key tasks to complete at work in the next few weeks.
How off your target school's score are you? How does your direct competition score? How is your GPA? with these questions in mind, do you feel the need to address the issue in the optional essay? It may still sound like an excuse. Perhaps you could mention that you are going to retake after submission (preferably)/ will retake if the adcom asks you to. That shows some action and IMO is more convincing than giving reasons for the suboptimal performance.
You should find out your target school's policy for accepting scores after submission.
Also, you could evaluate whether you should retake and apply in R1 in a fresh cycle.
Hi, thanks for the response. I'm off by 80 points and I'll include that I would retake if asked. Retaking now would be quite a stretch as I'm still a bit under the weather a. I just wanted to explain why the score was low and I know it may sound like an excuse but it was definitely unavoidable. I have the health report if needed; I was ill while writing and couldn't answer all.
I graduated 5 years ago and have been working since then. I work at a top firm and have been promoted quite a number of times and I'm hoping that would help a bit but yeah, it's really their choice at the end. I just felt I could try explaining but if it sounds like an excuse - oh well.
About the GPA, didn't school in the US, schooled in the UK but my results were good.
