Re: Around the World in 80 Questions (Day 2): The expected drop in the [#permalink]
The correct answer is (E).

The sentence is about the impact of the expected drop in the price of cotton on agrarian nations. The word "impact" is followed by the preposition "on," so the correct verb form must be "have." The word "diminish" means to make something smaller or less in size or importance. The word "impede" means to make something more difficult or slow.

The sentence should read:

The expected drop in the price of cotton could have a serious impact on agrarian nations and severely impede the possibility of attaining an economic growth rate above 10 percent.

The other options are incorrect because they use the wrong verb form or the wrong preposition. Option (A) uses the verb "be," which is not the correct verb form to use with the preposition "to." Option (B) uses the verb "seriously impact on," which is not a correct verb phrase. Option (C) uses the verb "seriously impact on" and the preposition "of," which is not the correct preposition to use with the word "attaining."

Re: Around the World in 80 Questions (Day 2): The expected drop in the [#permalink]
The correct answer is (E).

The sentence should be grammatically correct and clear. The word "be" is not necessary in the sentence, and the word "on" should be changed to "in" to make the sentence flow better. The word "impede" is more formal than "diminish," so it is the better choice in this context.

Here is the corrected sentence:

The expected drop in the price of cotton could have a serious impact on agrarian nations and severely impede the possibility of attaining an economic growth rate above 10 percent.

The other options are incorrect for the following reasons:

(A) The word "be" is unnecessary in the sentence.
(B) The word "on" should be changed to "in."
(C) The word "impede" is more formal than "diminish," and it is not the better choice in this context.
(D) The word "seriously" is redundant in the sentence.

(A) be a serious impact to agrarian nations and severely diminish the possibility to attain
(B) seriously impact on agrarian nations and severely impede the possibility to attain
(C) seriously impact on agrarian nations and severely impede the possibility of attaining
(D) have a serious impact on agrarian nations and severely diminish the possibility of attaining
(E) have a serious impact on agrarian nations and severely impede the possibility to attain
_____________________________________________________
A- ''could be a serious impact'' is idiomatically uncommon. the word ''impact'' is usually used with preposition ''on''.
B - both sides of the sentence are parallel, but there is a new word ''Impede'' - hold on that choice
C - in this context '' possibility of attaining'' fits best than ''possibility to attain''. Because, if we read the sentence with ''possibility to attain'' it may imply that '' Expected drop in X severely impede the possibility in order to (similar to ''to) attain an economic growth ...''. - illogic meaning.
D - option is grammatically correct and gives precise meaning without abovementioned mistakes.
E - it has the same error as in option C.

If we compare B to D, D uses word ''diminish'' in the question stem and therefore it does not change the intended meaning. Hence, D is our winner.
Hope, it helps.

seriously impact on - wrong. eliminate B and C
to attain - shows intention while the statement shows that the "price drop" could possibly result in economic growth above 10 percent. Eliminate A and E
