Concept tested :- Parallelism, tense

(A) be a serious impact to agrarian nations and severely diminish the possibility to attain (parallelism is not maintained here, 2nd verb 'diminish' is modified correctly but 1st verb 'be' lacks a modifier)
(B) seriously impact on agrarian nations and severely impede the possibility to attain (both the verbs impact and impede are modified correctly and are parallel to each other)
(C) seriously impact on agrarian nations and severely impede the possibility of attaining (both the verbs impact and impede are modified correctly and are parallel to each other but 'of attaining' is odd here)
(D) have a serious impact on agrarian nations and severely diminish the possibility of attaining (Wrong tense usage, simple present tense should be used when there is no time marker present in the sentence)
(E) have a serious impact on agrarian nations and severely impede the possibility to attain (Same as D)

The expected drop in the price of cotton could be a serious impact to agrarian nations and severely diminish the possibility to attain an economic growth rate above 10 percent.

Quote:
(A) be a serious impact to agrarian nations and severely diminish the possibility to attain
Expected drop cannot be itself an impact to agrarian nations. Illogical meaning. This option can be rejected.

Quote:
B) seriously impact on agrarian nations and severely impede the possibility to attain
"Impact" is a noun & "seriously" is an adverb. Adverb cannot be used to modify a noun. Hence, this option can be rejected.

Quote:
(C) seriously impact on agrarian nations and severely impede the possibility of attaining
Same issue as in B.

Quote:
(D) have a serious impact on agrarian nations and severely diminish the possibility of attaining
IMO, "possibility of" is idiomatic.

Quote:
(E) have a serious impact on agrarian nations and severely impede the possibility to attain
IMO, "possibility to" is unidiomatic.

Hence OA should be D.

The expected drop in the price of cotton could be a serious impact to agrarian nations and severely diminish the possibility to attain an economic growth rate above 10 percent.

(A) be a serious impact to agrarian nations and severely diminish the possibility to attain
THIS SENTENCE IS GRAMMATICALLY INCORRECT. COULD BE A SERIOUS IMPACT DOES NOT MAKE ANY LOGICAL SENSE.

(B) seriously impact on agrarian nations and severely impede the possibility to attain
HERE THE USE OF SERIOUSLY IMPACT MUST BE FOLLOWED BY THE ARTICLE "THE" INSTEAD OF THE PREPOSITION "ON". IT IS UNIDOMATIC AND DOES NOT SOUND CORRECT.
(C) seriously impact on agrarian nations and severely impede the possibility of attaining
SAME REASON AS FOR B.

(D) have a serious impact on agrarian nations and severely diminish the possibility of attaining
THIS CHOICE SOUNDS THE MOST CORRECT ONE, SINCE THE USAGE OF HAVE MAKES IT SOUND MORE GRAMMATICALLY CORRECT. ALSO ATTAINING IS MORE IDIOMATICALLY CORRECT IN THIS CASE THAN
"TO ATTAIN"

(E) have a serious impact on agrarian nations and severely impede the possibility to attain
THE MAJOR DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THIS CHOICE AND CHOICE D IS "TO ATTAIN" OR "OF ATTAINING"
OF ATTAINING SOUNDS MORE IDIOMATICALLY CORRECT.
THE CORRECT CHOICE IS ANSWER D.

(A) be a serious impact to agrarian nations and severely diminish the possibility to attain
the preferred preposition to use with impact is 'impact on' rather than 'impact to'

(B) seriously impact on agrarian nations and severely impede the possibility to attain
The phrase "seriously impact on" is grammatically incorrect. It should be "seriously impact agrarian nations"

(C) seriously impact on agrarian nations and severely impede the possibility of attaining
same mistake as option B

(D) have a serious impact on agrarian nations and severely diminish the possibility of attaining
"Have a serious impact" and "severely diminish" are parallel verb phrases that effectively convey the potential consequences of the expected drop in cotton prices
Hence, this is the best option

(E) have a serious impact on agrarian nations and severely impede the possibility to attain
"severely impede the possibility to attain"(just delaying) does not convey the meaning as effectively as diminish (making it less likely)

"..Diminish the possibility to attain.."

In this context, possibility of attain/attaining is gramatically correct. So we can right away eliminate A,B and E.

Now option C says " Could seriously impact on agrarian nations..". The use of (form of) serious seems fine. But
Option D seems a better choice in thay regard "Could have a serious impact on .. " And it maintians the same meaning we want to convey.

So answer is D
