Hi Maria,

I have heard that the acceptance rate at Duke and Darden in their ED round is less than R1 and that an Indian applicant is better off applying in R1 to these schools. How true is this ?

Hi maria!
I would appreciate if you could evaluate my profile and suggest on below:

Profile Summary:

Academics:
Graduate in BE Civil (2016 Pass out), Average Academics (80 percentile).
During primary school received few merit based scholarships.

Work Experience:
7 Years of Work experience (Excluding Internship of 5months on construction Site).
Work profiles during this 7 years as:
Profile 1 (15 Months): Worked as a Trainer, teaching engineering software's. Conducted industrial workshops, college trainings aside of in hour training etc.
Profile 2 (40 Months): Switched to core role of a Civil Engineer at country's leading wind energy firm.
Worked in Operation and Maintenance role in the subsidiary of parent firm, role was hybrid (office plus wind site's). Was promoted to assistant manager in the parent firm at the end.
Profile 3 (21 Months): Recent profile, Switched to EPC- energy based firm in IT function (firm has global presence since 400 years). Part of COE-Global team, have participated in some Digitalization Projects and work as application specialist.

Aside of the above work experience, I have also worked in family business for considerable time. Family business is a wholesale FMCG goods distributor in rural areas.

Extra Curriculars:
-Meritious Scholarships during primary school.
-Work with an NGO since one year. (In role as a Drive Lead, for academic/food drives for poor kids)
-Chess player. (90 percentile rating, 1300+ rating in Blitz)

GMAT:
First attempt, Oct 2023: 680 (Q50,V31,IR4)
Second attempt, Dec 2023: 680(Q49,V35,IR8)

I am 29, and am planning for a shift to Product Management role's in tech companies (Or FMCG based companies where my business experience can be capitalized, Like Walmart/Amazon).

My targeted colleges are:
IIMA PGPX, ISB, NYU Stren Tech, Coronell Tech, Kellog 1 Year, IMD.

With my profile, and GMAT score is it advisable to apply for these college's & be hopeful for admit?
Also, for schools outside of India, I will need to rely on scholarships due to financial constraints. Will the schools consider my profile for scholarship? (I am planning to try and improve score if it will help in scholarship).

Should I reconsider & think about realistic colleges: Emory one year?

Request your insights,
Thanks and Regards.

Hello everyone!
I’m planning for the 2025 intake, got 585 Gmat FE, planning for MS Finance - LSE, LBS and MBA - Imperial, Oxford, and Cambridge.
1) Education - CGPA(undergrad)-9.7 from H.R. College of Commerce (Mumbai University) also cleared 2 levels of CFA and I am planning to give 3rd level in Feb-25
2) Work ex- Currently, 4 Years and will be 5 years by the time I start my course next year (2 years with Deutsche Bank in the middle office and 3 years of experience in boutique front office Investment Banking working on live deals and fund-raises)
What is the possibility to get into these colleges in R1?
I am done with GMAT because my score is not improving so wanted to know, do I have a chance at any of the above colleges?

Hi ApplicantLab, How much weight does the pedigree of a recommender hold?

I have three recommenders:
- CTO and Co-founder, IIT Madras alumnus – I worked directly with him for over five years, contributing to several impactful projects.
- Founder of a lesser-known but profitable startup – I worked closely with him and have several impactful contributions to highlight.
- Stanford GSB MBA graduate – While I have a strong rapport with this person, there are fewer impactful projects to showcase compared to the others.

Given these backgrounds, could you help me understand the relative weight the GSB alumnus' recommendation might carry compared to the others? Also, which recommenders should I choose? I am targeting M7 + ISB.

Thanks for asking me to answer this! (this was asked in 2 different places so I'm just going to paste my answer here as well)!

The quality of the relationship )and therefore strength of the anecdotes) matters more than pedigree
-- If the GSB graduate does not know you that well, then please go with the other person.

Now, if we're talking only a MARGINAL difference in what the GSB alum can say vs the start-up founder, that is, if the stories of impact will be very similar or essentially identical, then sure, all else being equal, the GSB degree is a "nice to have".... but if going with the GSB person means that there will a reduction in the quality of the stories told, then don't do it -- at least, not for the programs in the USA.

The quality of your leadership stories matters more than a blander recc from someone with "pedigree".

Source: not only doing admissions consulting for 20 years, but I also attend an annual conference with admissions officers from the top US programs and this message has been repeated time and time again.

And fwiw, when I applied to Harvard, I needed three (3!) recommendations back in the day, and none of my 3 recommenders had MBAs or had even attended college in the USA.... while I did tangentially know some people at my job with HBS / Yale MBAs, they didn't know me nearly as well and would not have been able to REALLY talk about my leadership impact / style / etc.

Hope this helps!,
Maria

Hi ApplicantLab

Looking for a quick profile evaluation and B-school suggestions based on the following:

GMAT Score: 675 (GMAT Focus)

Work Experience: 5 years
8 months in Software Development in Samsung R&D India
2.5 years in software Engineer (last role at Atlassian)

2 years running my own creative/design agency serving global clients (US, UK, EU)

International Exposure: The majority of the clientele is international

Graduation Percentage - 81% (Btech CSE)
XII - 93.4%
X - 10 CGPA

I would love to gain insights on which US Business Schools I should realistically target based on my background. I am open to both 1-year and 2-year MBA formats.

Thanks in advance!
