Hey Everyone,
I am pretty stoked (and emotional) as I write about my acceptance into INSEAD's EMBA program.
Target schools: Booth in HK; INSEAD in HK
My background:
1. I'm a 38-year-old
2. Indian-born Canadian citizen
3. Grew up in Montreal and Singapore
4. University RIT in NY, USA
5. Worked in California (Abbott Labs) and Washington DC (Gartner)
6. Moved back to Singapore to join our medium-sized family business
7. I'm a Sales Director for our family business
Other things that I added to my resume:
1. I am a competitive Ironman triathlete. I did 1 full IronMan and 8 marathons and 20 Half IronMans
2. I used to have Asthma that I've cured.
3. I hired a life coach last year, and that helped me tremendously!
Academic:
1. 3/4 in my undergraduate (deans list in the last 6 quarters straight)
2. I took the Executive Assessment and scored a 150 flat (10 on the IR, 8 on the verbal, and 11 on the Quant)
3. I also took the INSEAD Assessment (don't know the score)
Outcome: got into INSEAD and stopped my application for Booth because of HK's problems with Covid. Singapore is open!
Questions asked during the oral interview:
1. 30 minutes business case that I need to crack.
> Questions were about my understanding of the case and improvements I'd make to the model
> I received a P/L, Balance sheet, and competitor data for a boutique ornamental trees manufacturing company
2. Why do I want to go to INSEAD. I said five reasons:
> I'm taking over eventually and even though I solve business problems every day, for me to solve them more efficiently with a structured data-driven logical frame is key!
> The network and leverage their professional and cultural backgrounds while solving business cases.
> Succession planning courses are critical for me! I named a few classes of interest for me.
> Because we work in a family business, I need to prove to my father (my boss), my employees, my customers, and suppliers that I can and will put in the hard work to get into a top school. I didn't just get my Dad to get me in.
> Lastly, if we sell our family business, I have a prestigious firm to fall back upon as it will give me the network to talk about my options. The "prestige" is very important but not important as the first three.
3. What are my professional values
> I value building teams (I have 10 direct reports) and giving them a career
> I value building extremely fun and innovative digital and non-digital products from ideation to execution
> I value the critical need to to meet an unmet need and giving ultimate human experiences
4. What are my personal values
> I am an extreme go-getter. This is demonstrated in my triathlons and my work ethic.
> I am highly curious. I seek for bettering myself and hungry to keep learning. This is demonstrated from my life coaching and the books I read
> I am take health and wellness seriously. Again, IronMan triathlons and healthy living.
5. What will I add to the classroom
> If they want an Asian who lived in North America who has worked in an MNC and a medium-sized family business, I'm their guy!
> I can help my peers when it comes to any real small to medium sized business problem. Heck, I've been there, done that!
> I will bring my sporting experiences and inspire my peers!
6. How do I manage stress
> I put my running shoes on and run forever or jump into the pool and use the pool as therapy to stay calm.
> I ask questions and seek to find answers.
> I also gave a few experiential examples.
Why I think I got the offer:
1. I have a very global background. India, Canada, USA, Singapore
2. I have other things going for myself: IronMan triathlon for 20 years, life coach to work on myself
3. I have worked in both strategy consulting (Gartner consulting) and now work in our family business.
4. There is an oral interview that consists of a case and why I want to go to INSEAD. I think that with my past experience and knowing exactly "why" I want to go to INSEAD is key in getting in. You better NAIL the reason and be very AUTHENTIC in your reasoning. If you don't know why you want want to invest 200K in a program, then don't go!
When the panelists asked me why INSEAD, I was teary because I know how badly I wanted this because I know that to take over my family business and become CEO, I need INSEAD to help me get there.
Man, I studied very very hard for the Executive Assessment and the INSEAD Assessment. Took four months out of my life.
I know this a short write-up, however please feel free to ping me to discuss any questions.
Thanks.
