I do not think it "hurts" your application if you are from the west coast and cannot make it to campus in that regards. But you need to consider the fact that when they compare you to others that are similar. They already have interview details, face for a name, and know the applicant has visited campus and somewhat knows what Tuck is about. There is a disadvantage in that regard.
I would do what you can to show that you did your best to get to know Tuck. Register for the tuck connections, go to every event in the area you live in that is hosted by Tuck, and sign up for any and all online sessions. They probably note down names of people how attend so the more times they see your name, the less they worry about you fitting in.
Just my thoughts on it. BTW I am from Cali and made the trip out. I do agree with the post above about making it a trip. Its super easy to visit the Boston Area schools and Tuck in one swoop with little effort and then even possible heading over to NY to visit those schools.
