Why is everyone here so pessimistic? :/

Probably to let themselves down if they get dinged and to be elated if they get an invite. Just be as positive as possible and hope you get something!

I’m old, I failed out of undergrad the first time, and I got my undergrad from a mediocre school, but I’m shooting my shot and hoping for the best!

No. They definitely want the people who have worked with you the most in order to give them the best insight into your potential. They have the largest MBA alumni base in the world, so having an alum who doesn't know you well write you a rec simply because they are an alum will carry no weight and will likely hurt your candidacy. Go with the people who know you the best and can provide the most stories/anecdotes/proof of your strengths in their responses. Good luck!

Can anyone shed some light on recommendation? Both my recommenders who work with me directly didn't go to HBS. However, I know this HBS alumni who thinks highly of me but doesn't work with me. Is it worth it to ask her for recommendation to HBS?

Others, who didn't, should not lose hope.

I have a quick question regarding the Off-Campus Interviewee Reception events with former alums / other applicants - does anyone have a recommendation on what is the dress code for this event? Seems like a business casual type of event.

If there is no stated dress code, I would go with business casual (maybe even a coat / no tie for men). Erring on the side of being overdressed is always better than the alternative.

I have two candidates attending the one in London tomorrow and I know that one of them is wearing smart jeans with a collared shirt and a suit jacket. It's at an upscale Bistro in downtown London so I think that makes sense but if it was in a more formal location, a tie would probably be advisable. orange1
