Hi everyone, I flunked the quant part of my GMAT yesterday (43Q, 700 overall), and with no time to retake it, I was hoping to get your perspective on two questions: 1) Would you recommend adressing a subpar GMAT score in the supplemental short answer, even if there are no extenuating circumstances? 2) If invited to an interview, would it be helpful to have retaken the GMAT by then and earned a significantly higher score, or would candidates have passed such hurdle at that point?

GMAT is one component of the test. Yes, it is under the HBS average of 730+ which damages your application, however it is not the only factor

cuz GMAT places more emphasis on quant when compared to GRE. Once again, if you pass out from a top B school, I don’t think it should matter but I’ve heard quite a few MBA students talk about consulting firms ask about their GMAT scores

Okay.. I think most Asian folks take much more difficult qunat courses.. but IDK if that matters for consulting folks. COnsider, Indian MBA exam - CAT has much more difficult quant test

Can a high GRE score compensate for GMAT if you want to get into consulting ? Any Idea ?

Again, take my words with a pinch of salt cuz I’m no SME. But I’ve heard that consulting firms are pretty adamant on GMAT scores. I remember my GMAT coach giving me examples of people who had to take the GMAT post MBA to get into consulting. Again this might be a one off thing, but that’s what I’ve heard

Could be coz, my friends we

MY bad* buggy chat

My friends weren’t even asked for GMAT while applying to BCG and McKinsey. The one that did get into latter had a GRE converting to a 680 GMAT (ORM).

Profile was very generic too, nothing to glamorous. Airline industry, Entry level positions, promoted twice before MBA. That’s all

Although yes, there was a section on BCG portal- optional to upload your test scores. That was like 3 years ago, things may have changed in last year though I have not checked with the career services recently- focused more on Admissions at the moment

To play devil’s advocate here, the airline industry is underrepresented in MBA admissions, and being promoted twice before the MBA is quite a bit if you only have like 4 years or five years of work experience, especially when that is not the norm for the industry. I imagine they had decent casing skills. 680 is a bit under the line though, agreed.

Hi - Does it really matter if you give GRE as opposed to GMAT?

Sweta133 The objective truth is that business schools generally do not make a big difference between GRE and GMAT scores. But the majority of leading business schools have more comprehensive reference data for GMAT scores and use GMAT percentiles to define what makes an academically strong student within different applicant groups. Although some leading MBA programs disclose the GMAT scores of their admitted cohorts, they do not necessarily do the same for GRE scores. Based on my observation of admitted applicants, schools generally consider GRE and GMAT scores on a comparable scale as long as the GRE percentiles match or exceed the good percentiles of GMAT scores. However, individuals who score average or lower on the GRE despite having a strong profile might have a slightly less favorable outcome than someone with a similar percentile on the GMAT but with a strong profile. I think it's important that people from overrepresented backgrounds who take GRE understand that expectations are high.

Best wishes

Not really in his case. Function and degree screamed ORM. But, I know how he got what he did, very interesting story. I’ll reserve it for some other time tho

Am I going nuts here? Last week I noticed that the admissions director posted a blog on the timing of the invitations as they do each year. And that it mentioned two different waves the first date being this Thursday. And I can no longer find this I don't remember what wave two was. Bizarro.

Okay, interesting! I hope it’s just one wave this year; I’d like to be put out of my misery as quickly as possible. The email I got when I submitted my app said that they expect to send out invitations in February so it’ll be interesting to see if anything goes out this Thursday
