You have to choose a number, that number will have a topic.

IIMA PGPX Interview tips

Hi friends, I have been receiving quite a few requests for help with interview prep. Sharing some of them here in the interest of the greater good. Interview experiences are very different and it is difficult to predict how an individual's interview will go. However, it is good to go in with some preparation and a lot of confidence. So, here goes.....

- Procedures and process:

a. Before the interview: You'll be asked to write one essay or two (I dont remember, not relevant because it could change from year to year). Some profs would have read these documents and some would not have. Choose a location of your preference.

b. During the interview: I will not talk about the logistics but of what happened during interview (at least in our batch). You walk in, profs give you a topic and ask you to prepare for a couple of minutes and then give an extempore for around 5 mins (may or may not ask questions). Then follows the regular MBA interview of going through the resume, future aspirations, knowledge about the industry and so on.

- Is there any preference for a venue ?

There is no edge at all as far as I know, the profs really dont see any such difference. However, it would be a good experience for you to visit the campus and understand the program better (to a small extent). You could also get to meet some of the participants as well if we are available.

- What kind of things panel would like to see in me.

The panel likes to see the same things in all participants as far as i understand:

a. Good conversationalist

b. Hold clear views on any topic and able to articulate them well. c. Show aspects of learnability and not require much spoonfeeding. This is a very independent institution when it comes to learning

d. Explain achievements (and not roles and responsbilities) without becoming too pompous

e. Not being argumentative and confrontationalist.

- Any tip that worked for you in winning panel heart.

a. Portray your profile uniquely. Show aspects of leadership (not defined by being team lead or manager or any other titular responsibility)

b. Take hints from the panel when they offer it to you.

c. Do not be negative, angry, loud or low spirited even if the panel puts you down. Some profs may try methods of stress testing but that is really to ensure that they do not get bored (think about it, they would be interviewing applicants from the morning so may be looking for some fun some time in between). Most of them are sweethearts and in campus are extremely approachable and willing to help.

d. You will meet a lot of dickheads in interviews who act as if their profiles and resumes alone will ensure they get a seat. I have seen enough of such people being chased out of these interviews because their attitude sucked. During the interviews, dont get overawed by anyone thinking their profiles are better than yours.
e. Most of us had no clue as to whether we would get in or not. It is very hard to guess, so dont waste any time doing it. If you are good and have performed well in the interview, forget about the results till you actually get them.
f. One tip is to understand who will be the profs in your panel (especially if you arrive well before your interview time, they would have allocated panel numbers to you and you would get a chance to see who the profs are in that panel but wont know their name obviously). Take a look at the faculty profile at the link below (some profs have pictures in their profile) and figure out which areas these profs are from and try to steer your way accordingly in the interview. In my panel, I had an economics prof and an ops management prof. The ops prof totally fell in love with me because I had worked with Toyota and in Japan as well for them, and I mentioned a lot of economic history (the impact of the way the British East indian company conducted their business in India). This gives you a bit of confidence which shouldnt be portrayed as overconfidence though. http://www.iimahd.ernet.in/faculty-and- ... ofile.html

Extempore topics:
1. Do Governments trust enterpreneurs ? (my topic)
2. Toilets are the new temples.
3. Define India
4. Pen is mightier than the sword.
5. Reservation in public jobs.

Thank You Anirudh for the inputs!

Are the extempore topics alllocated to the candidate by the panel or is the candidate free to choose one?

Regds,
Sanghamitra

ESSAY ANALYSIS OF PGPX QUESTIONS:

Essay 1 : Describe a situation where you failed and how did you deal with this experience. What did you learn from this?
(Max up to 500 Words.)

In our experience of helping MBA applicants, failure essays are more difficult to write as compared to the achievement essays. They require a lot more introspection, analysis and ofcourse the ability to accept, that yes, I was wrong. And we mean, accept it truly. TRULY! Many a times when we are brainstorming with applicants, we hear lame failure stories, such as issues due to prioritizing tasks, failing because they love to take additional work. Its difficult to offer any real insights in such stories and after 3+ years of work experience, they begin to sound like your experiences lacked any depth at all.

So when you are brainstorming for essay ideas, go beyond the most obvious stories (like the ones mentioned above). Think of a time when you really slipped up. Your project could have suffered, it could have led to negative consequences – that’s okay, so long as you learned a major lesson and preferably, got a chance to implement your learnings in your future assignments.

Now, there is one caveat to selecting stories – you definitely don’t want to offer stories which will make the admissions committee doubt your capabilities. For instance, doing something so drastically wrong that you were asked to leave the organization, or maybe doing something ethically wrong.

We suggest the following structure for this essay:
1. What was the situation
2. What actions did you take?
3. How did you fail? Why did you fail?
4. What was the impact of the failure?
5. Could you salvage the situation? If yes, how?
6. What was your analysis of the failure?
7. What did you learn out of this situation?
8. What actions did you take to improve?
9. If you already had the chance, how did you do a similar thing better the next time? If not, how would you do something similar better the next time?
10. (Optional): Is there some IIMA program feature that you will leverage to improve further?

Your essay may not require each one of the steps mentioned above, so pick out the ones that most matter in your storytelling. And we will reiterate the most important tip: let the focus of your essay be on analysis and self improvement. A common error in such essays is to utilize 60% of the space in explaining the situation.

***********************************************************************************************************************

Essay 2 : Describe a situation where your professional ethics were challenged and how you came to terms with the situation. What did you learn from this? (Max up to 500 Words.)

We are glad that IIMA has traditionally ditched the regular SoP or the career goals essay to ask two behavioral questions. There is scope for applicants to reveal so much about themselves through such questions. The focus, once again is on analysis and introspection of the values that matter to you and why. And ofcourse, how far are you willing to go to uphold them. This has to be followed with your reasoning for your actions- leaving this section out can make your essay limp and unrevealing, and will be the differentiator between the successful applications and the unsuccessful ones. Ultimately, every situation teaches you something, and this learning is important in every b-school essay.

We suggest the STAR approach for building this essay:
1. What was the situation?
2. What was the ethical challenge?
3. What were your values that were challenged?
4. What were your thoughts at that time? What dilemma did you face in going this way or that way? What risk would you take in either situation?
5. Eventually what actions did you take and why?
6. What was the outcome?
7. What did you learn out of this situation (about yourself and about handling such situations)?
8. (Optional) If placed in a similar situation once again, how would you react?

Once again, we will emphasize on the reasoning for your response to the situation and the learning you derived from the situation. In terms of space distribution, keep about 40-50% of the essay for these two important elements. Mean editing will be a key to successful writing.

Our parting tip, yet again is to self analyze and reveal.

Hey everyone,

Two quick questions:

1. Is the IIMA login working for you? I just tried to access it and it says 'Forbidden'. Can someone else please check?

2. From the email I just got from IIMA, they're asking for the resume, photograph, documents submitted before the 25th of October. But, the essay is to be submitted by the 27th of October. Wondering how we can submit the photo and the resume (both to be uploaded to the application) without the essay by the 25th. Thoughts?

Have you selected the Round - 1 radio button because by default Round - 2 is selected ? As far as your second question is concerned it's self explanatory when you login. The Essays are to be submitted in a different section than the rest of information.

Got Interview schedule for US- 11/26 8.30 AM IST. I think they mean EST. The website notification also states, 'To be announced' and I did not get email notification yet for the schedule. Not sure whether they have any more changes to this.

Did anyone else got updates for India/ US/ UK?

Just submitted the Essays. For benefit of others, as we got to type the Essay in and there is no 'Save' option, and only 'Save & Submit' I typed in both the essays in full and clicked that. The session got expired and all my text was gone :(

I think it took about 40 to 45 mins to type in first time. Later on I tested the portal and saw it did not expire for atleast 30 mins, then typed my essays again. To be safe, I navigated through Photo & Resume links for every 15 mins in different tabs to keep session active. Lastly after successful 'Save & Submit' still I am able to edit essay if I want. Looks like it only Saved(hope the essays got submitted).

Expected much better from IIMA.

Most interview candidates have reported one male and one female professor as interviewers. The interviews have a lot of questions, a lot of cross questioning, but its relaxed. Expect a 30 minute interview.

We have complied some questions that have been asked traditionally. Here's a list:

1. Walk me through your resume
2. The challenges and opportunities in your industry
3. Current affairs knowledge for an extempore question.
4. Your career goals- short term/ long term
5. Why are these your career goals?
6. How will your past experience help in these?
7. If you don’t get admission, what will you do?
8. Which other b-schools have you applied to?
9. If you get into IIMA v/s other schools mentioned in answer 10, then which will you select, and why?
10. Questions related to work experience
11. Behavioral questions
12. What are your hobbies?
13. Which books do you read/ are currently reading?
14. Questions for adcoms

For tips on how to answer interview questions, watch this:
