Questions for Review:
1. Given my academic scores and career trajectory, what are my chances for ISB?
2. What GMAT score should I target?
3. What additional steps can I take over to further strengthen my application?
1. Competitiveness for ISB
Your profile has distinctive elements that stand out in ISB’s applicant pool:

National-level, policy-impact work in sustainability — rare for most applicants.

Blend of public sector + international development + Big 4 consulting is unique.

Recognition by the Prime Minister is a huge credibility marker.

The main challenges:

Academics — CGPA 6.78 plus below-average 10th/12th scores mean you’ll need to reassure the adcom through a strong GMAT and a clear narrative that shows your professional performance outweighs grades.

Career break — not a negative if framed as intentional and productive, but it should be addressed proactively in your essays.

Verdict: Competitive if you over-index on test score and storytelling.

2. Target GMAT Score
For ISB, given your academics, I’d recommend targeting GMAT 720+ (or GMAT Focus ~675+). This will act as an academic counterbalance. If you can push to 740+, even better — it would move you from “competitive” to “compelling.”

3. Steps to Strengthen Profile Before Applying

Quant readiness: Even if your role isn’t math-heavy, show comfort with numbers — maybe through a certification (e.g., Business Analytics, Financial Modeling) or a GMAT IR score spike.

Leadership narrative: Position yourself as a bridge between government policy and private sector execution — that’s a rare ISB fit.

Extracurricular reactivation: Even small-scale community or professional initiatives now can help offset the break.

Recommendation letters: Secure ones that highlight tangible leadership and project impact.

Garima25, You have a great profile. Working with Government especially in the field of environment and sustainability will be highly valued. The recognitions will speak for themselves.

The problem which needs to be solved for most public sector employees is the alignment of employability potential and skills. not for you. You already transitioned into Big4. Also career break for genuine reason is a non-issue here.

The marks at school level is little low but given the work experience this can be ignored. Since extra curricular is not mentioned, assuming it to be average, overall profile is highly likely to get an admissions nod.

A 645+ will be good enough score for you.

No additional steps required. Prepare for GMAT and apply. You will get through.

Can I get a ISB interview call with 690 GMAT classic
10-92
12-54
Grad-54
7 year work ex in PSB
FRM
CFA L2
Oh...looks like overall academics are also a bit modest. So, the road to ISB might be tough with a 690 classic.

It’s possible but your scores and profile highlights are like a roller coaster, so it’s hard to be certain.

Good 10th
Bad 12th and Grad score (Big turnoff)
7 years in PSB (good experience in PSU bank)
CFA L2 and FRM: Good achievements.

IIM-C is the best fit for you though...

One of my candidates converted IIM C with Classic score of 640 and he had 8 years work in PNB (was working as chief Manager)

But his academic scores were NOT below 60 anywhere...

Profile Evaluation :-
Hello team,
My primary focus is ISB PGP for this year, below are my profile details :-
10th - 10 CGPA
12th - 91%
Electrical Engineering from MS Ramaiah College, Bangalore :- 8.74 CGPA, graduated in 2020.
GMAT FE = 635
Not sure if this matter but got 96.8 % in CAT 2024
Worked for 1 year in L&T Constructions and I am currently working at Deloitte USI as a consultant for US healthcare clients, received multiple performance awards and consistent strong rating. Total Work Ex :- 5 years
My co curricular is only in volunteering where I have been a teaching volunteer for Teach for India at a government school for around 50 hours.
I am going to obviously attempt the GMAT FE since it is still lower than the median, however wanted to know what my chances are if I am not able to improve my score.

Hi team, would like to get a profile evaluation for ISB.

10th- 95%, 12th - 88%, Btech CSE(VIT Vellore) - 8.82

3 years work experience in ZS Associates on consulting end. 1 promotion. Have received recognition awards for good performance ( Received PPO)

Have won multiple national level case competitions from IIM C, IIMB etc. Awarded Dare2compete top 30 Eng Leaders. Received Special achievers award from College.

State level Table tennis player. Won multiple school state level tournaments, and represented at nationals. Have Khelo India Scholarship.

Senior Diploma in Painting and Music( Tabla Instrument). Also have volunteer experience as student consultant in NGOs and helping underprivileged communities.

Recently gave GRE - but scored only 315. Would retake the exam to get a higher score to apply in Round 2. What are the chances of securing an admit through this profile
If there is scope then I would recommend that switch to GMAT.

GRE isn’t even acceptable in IIM C for expecutive MBA and engineers should try to stick to GMAT for MBA plans. GRE might put in disadvantage.

Your profile has no red flag... so stay optimistic...

Hi Bhoopendra,
There is no downside to writing the GRE or the GMAT. Either of the tests is acceptable across the globe, including the numerous Indian schools. It's just IIM C that doesn't accept the GRE. Candidates nailing elite B-schools with stellar GRE scores are in abundance right now.

I am an admission consultant myself and I have enough statistics to support my claim

keeping in mind the statistic of Indian students there is definitely downside of GRE for Indian engineers.

P.S.I have read the article of P&Q thoroughly 🙂

Last year, I have placed one candidate in Columbia with GRE of 335, one in the Yale with a GRE of 336. This Yale guy was working in Amazon as a product manger after obtaining his degree from DTU. There are so many others. I see the candidates are also getting admitted to ISB, IIM A, IIM B and IIMC with GRE score. this perception of preferring GMAT over GRE was there is five-six years back, I believe, but not now. If you trawl done most of the schools's websites, most of the schools will say in clear words that there is no preference of one test over the other.

These are pretty high GRE scores though. What about someone with a range 325 to 330?

Just to add more: For the Indian schools, your standardized test should not be older than 3 years when you submit the application.

That's a good score. But the problem with us is we hail from an overrepresented demographic. Everyone has stellar profile and competitive standardized test. For sake of preaching diversity in an MBA classes (not for Indian schools), schools become choosy. I see a candidate with just 690 with decent amount of work experience from Nepal has crushed the full-time MBA of Insead, whereas an Indian with 740+ GMAT with solid experience was dinged by the same school in the same admission cycle. This is hard, but true!
