Hi! There will be many, many people applying with more leadership experience in this sector, and some with this experience topped with even more business-adjacent experience. I too came from a similar background when I applied to ISB, and with more ops leadership experience than this, and most of it was also international. So this is your competition. The sooner you realize that, the more effort you will put into strengthening your narrative. Coming to your goals, they are alright, but the biggest focus should be on giving strong reasons as to how you would bring value to a consulting firm's business. Do you know what MBBs consider when they shortlist resumes? You are not really that experienced in the industry yet, or if you are, that needs to show in how you speak critically about your projects in the essays, resume as well as the interviews. Sorry if I was too honest in this evaluation, but I am hoping this is for your best. Target upwards of a 695.

Profile:

GMAT Focus: 675
Work Experience: 2 years (will have ~2 years at application) as an Operations Engineer at one of India’s top oil & gas refineries.
Have led multiple process/energy optimization initiatives resulting in annual savings of ₹XX crore (can’t disclose exact numbers publicly).
Manage operations in a large refinery environment and have worked closely with cross-functional teams.

Education:

B.Tech. Chemical Engineering from one of the top 3 NITs (2024 graduate)
CGPA: 7.7/10

Leadership & Extracurriculars:

Class Representative
Training & Placement Cell member
Founded a student club
Organized multiple campus festivals/events
1-month summer internship at a leading FMCG company

Career Goal:
Transition into management consulting (MBB/Tier 2) or strategy roles post-MBA.

My questions:
What are my chances at ISB with this profile?
Is a 675 GMAT Focus competitive enough for ISB, or should I consider a retake?
Would you recommend applying in Round 1 or Round 2? Does R1 offer a meaningful advantage for someone with my profile?

Would love to take the opportunity. The fp&a trajectory across two fintech and insurtech startups is coherent. Decent early career progression. I understand that FP&A in startup environments is quite different from FP&A in large corporates. In your roles you likely would have been doing financial modelling, fundraising support, investor reporting, runway management, and unit economics analysis in fast-moving capital-constrained environments. If yes, then you should build the entire application around this.

Your, post-qualification work experience of 2 yrs 4 months is thin for both ISB and NUS. What have you built or led, and decided in two years that justifies an MBA now rather than in two or three years when the professional foundation is deeper? Think deeply.

You did not mention goals. That is a missing piece of self-knowledge at this stage. Just to guide you, FP&A at fintech startups can build into opportunities in several directions for eg CFO track at a growth-stage company, financial services consulting, venture capital, or fintech product strategy. But each will require a different approach and a different application narrative. So until you know what you specifically want, the application cannot meaningfully begin.

This doesn’t tell much about your experiences but nothing looks a red flag.

Your academics are decent and work experience of engineering may have a lot to share but you have chosen to hide to detail for now, even the name of your recruiters so much can’t be said.

I will just say that since you come from over representative pool, so you need to push your gmat at least beyond 665. After that case we can discuss more details such as your goals, your transferable skills etc.

Need Advice: 2 Months of Self-Study – Progress, but Stuck on Hard Questions (Target 705+)

Hi everyone,

I’ve been self-studying for the GMAT for the past two months, and I’ve made noticeable progress, but I’ve also identified some recurring issues that I’m not sure how to fix. I’d really appreciate advice from anyone who has been through a similar stage for Quant

I can solve most easy and a good number of medium GMAT Club questions comfortably, usually within 2 minute.
My biggest issue is with hard questions. I often struggle to identify the right approach. However, when I read the solution afterward, I usually understand the logic immediately and think, "That makes sense."
It feels like I have the concepts, but I don’t yet have the pattern recognition needed to quickly identify the best approach on my own.

### Verbal

I can solve most easy and many medium questions correctly.
Hard questions are still a challenge. My main problems are:

I can’t pre-think the answer choices quickly enough.
I spend too much time understanding the author’s intent, the logic between sentences, and the overall argument.
Because of this, I often exceed the ideal 2–3 minutes per question.

### Data Insights (DI)

My biggest issue is speed. I take too long to analyze tables, graphs, and multiple data sources before I can even start solving the question.
I feel that my data interpretation process isn’t efficient enough.

### My Questions

1. Is this a normal stage after about two months of preparation?
2. How do I improve my ability to recognize the correct approach for difficult Quant questions without looking at the solution?
3. How can I improve my reading speed, pre-thinking, and comprehension for difficult Verbal questions?
4. What is the best way to become faster at analyzing data in DI?
5. At this stage, should I continue solving more practice questions, or should I spend more time reviewing and analyzing my mistakes?

yes in verbal i got everything correct except 2 hard and 1 medium then why the score is 83 , in quant it it still very weak i only got 73 amd di is still a problem i got 76

can you tell me with above and why in verbal the score is 83 as starating 13 question were correct the 14 is medium which is worng and then 21 and 23 which were hard were wrong

I can’t pre-think the answer choices quickly enough.
I spend too much time understanding the author’s intent, the logic between sentences, and the overall argument.
Because of this, I often exceed the ideal 2–3 minutes per question.

### Data Insights (DI)

My biggest issue is speed. I take too long to analyze tables, graphs, and multiple data sources before I can even start solving the question.
I feel that my data interpretation process isn’t efficient enough.

### My Questions

1. Is this a normal stage after about two months of preparation?
2. How do I improve my ability to recognize the correct approach for difficult Quant questions without looking at the solution?
3. How can I improve my reading speed, pre-thinking, and comprehension for difficult Verbal questions?
4. What is the best way to become faster at analyzing data in DI?
5. At this stage, should I continue solving more practice questions, or should I spend more time reviewing and analyzing my mistakes?
