I think the bigger issue that I see with this is considering some schools less than others. I applied to Ross in R2, and I appreciate the school. Was Ross first on my list when I first started research? Not really. But I'd absolutely be thrilled to go there. I am sure I speak of most people who have found Ross' goodness sometime into the application process.
For me there's 1 dream school and 4 schools that I would absolutely love to goto.
No safety.
I'm planning to skip MBA if I don't get into my list of ivy. So yes I do agree with what you've said.
I mean I don't think there's anything wrong with applying to schools for the sake of validation. Even if you don't want to end up there. But I sincerely would rather spend that money on the PS4.
Everyone's got their own reasons for applying to the schools they apply to, but I personally wouldn't waste mine or my recommender's time if I had no real desire to go there. I didn't skip over any applications simply because I thought I couldn't get in (except maybe Stanford, the golden goose.) Harvard? Wharton? Booth? Not my bag baby, I did my due diligence and found what I believed to be the best fit for me as a student. Like Zakk (killer handle btw) I didn't bother with safeties. If you don't love it, don't do it, especially with such a huge commitment as B-School.
As with Souvik, Ross wasn't even on my radar when I first started applying, but while I was procrastinating...err...preparing my other apps I really did my research on Ross and bumped it into my R1. Would I have loved to get into SOM or Tuck? Hell yes, but I'm equally ecstatic that I got into Ross and can't wait to get there this fall. My .02, but if you love the places you're applying to, it won't matter where you get in.
