samkhat77, impressive profile! My background is also in Life Sciences but more hardcore in the science part and almost zero business exp.

PugLyfe, where did you do your UG? Based on your short and very limited description, I have to say that I was not blown away. I think you have a solid background and WE but maybe not very unique IMHO. It could also be as white male, you are losing in the diversity point. Sorry for the unsolicited opinion, but just giving my sincere thought as a bystander.

Greenzie,

Thanks. When I decided not to pursue a PhD program, the move to the business side was incredibly helpful for sure. What is your background in the Life Sciences? What sort of role do you want to pursue after business school?

UG was at a State school. Work experience is definitely unique, but I haven't really gone into detail here. I also have leadership EC's. Overall, I agree there are definitely way more impressive profiles. Just going by what I've seen on this forum, people with similar profiles do get some sort of scholarship offer. Rice gives 82% of incoming students an average of 60% scholarship $. I find it hard to believe I'm in the "bottom" 18%. I will try to negotiate, but I guess they also were not "blown away"

GMAT 650, GPA 3.0 in Finance. I also passed the CFA Level 1, which I think helped. My mom is from Honduras (originally from Palestine) and my dad was in the Military. I have lived in 3 countries and visited over 20. The firm I work for is very well known as well, which I think was another big plus to my app. I have managed several large projects within my firm as well and was able to get great letters of recommendation.

Hope this helps.

Best of luck to you all!

samkhat77, I am a 31 yo international student (Indonesian/Dutch). My BSc and Msc were in Biotech and PhD in Toxicology, which were all done in different countries. Industrial WE 3 years in two Fortune Global 500 as a scientist/subject matter expert. I want to do an MBA to help me transitioning from a super specialist to a more generalist, managerial role still in the same industry - Life Science (biotech, pharma, healthcare). I eventually didn't submit my application to Rice in round 3 even though I had already started it.

PugLyfe, you are right. I find it hard to believe as well if you end up in the 'bottom 18%'. I agree that you should negotiate, maybe they did a mistake somewhere or maybe they failed to see your unique WE. Good luck and hope you'll get something out of it but otherwise you have several good admits already :)

dpatt, do you mind sharing your scholarship amount? What attracted me to Rice is when I heard that Rice is a very generous school. thanks

Yup. I am certainly going to try. It can't hurt! Having other offers with scholarship money certainly helps too. I believe that my interview was very poor. I had posted about my experience after completing it and honestly thought my odds of admission were ruined because of it. I think that during my interview, I was unable to fully express my accomplishments and highlight positives. My interviewer kept asking about conflict. I was literally asked about conflict 5 times during my interview. It was very strange and rigid.

Hope we see some more admit posts roll in!

Re: Calling all Rice(Jones) Applicants: (2016 Intake) Class of 2018!! [#permalink]
Update: It has been communicated to me that there will be no negotiation of scholarship offers (or lack thereof). Surprisingly, I received somewhat of a snide remark in response to my email asking for funding consideration. It was pointed out to me that I should be grateful for receiving admittance to a top 20 program. I realize the undergraduate program is highly regarded, but the B-school has fluctuated quite a bit in the rankings over the previous 5 years. Frankly the only "rankings" that matter are US News rankings and they have never been inside the top 20.

I liked the program and thought it would be a good fit, but that kind of snide remark is unnecessary especially when I have much stronger competing offers. I will not be enrolling.

Good luck to everybody and I hope that my spot goes to someone eager to get off of the waitlist!

PugLyfe, I'm sorry to hear that and also surprised at the negative tone of their reply. I assume that you must have approached them politely so there is really no need of the snide remarks. I also never consider Rice as a top 20 school. The only ranking that rice came out as a top 20 is BW out 5 major rankings. So top 30 yes but definitely not top 20. Good luck!

I was certainly polite and expressed sincere interest in the program. One of the main reasons I applied was because of the culture, fit, and general satisfaction of current and former students. I did not apply because of their ranking. Even top 30 would be an inaccurate assessment if we go by the rankings standard of US News. 4 out of the last 5 years, it has been ranked 33-34, with one bump to 25. Again, this wouldnt have been an issue for me, but that kind of elitist attitude from an adcom member is pretty absurd. Programs that are perennially ranked in the top20 don't need to say it.

Hopefully the declined offer opens a space for an interested candidate. Good luck to everyone

I got gmat 660 Q50 V30, 1.5 years W/E in PE as investment manager who managed company's oversea investments and did business in 5 continents. 3 years trading analysis, specialized in metal commodity, as team manager in public traded company. Besides, I am co-funder of start-up Plastic Company in Florida, with sales 1.8 million last year in first half year operation. I have also started several companies starting from college. I consider my backgrounds competitive. Probably my GMAT was low and got dinged?

Not to be a downer, but yes most likely. Emory did a VERY similar thing with their second round applicants. Those that did not get admit calls/emails two days prior to deadline were rejected. Also, I'm in the same boat as you... stuck at submitted with no calls or emails. Looks like another ding for me :D

but hey, with Puglyfe declining, that's one more open seat! good luck to all.

Yep FT. There is a separate, albeit inactive, professionals program topic as well.
