I have received an offer letter from Ted Rogers Ryerson for MBA and am awaiting offer letter from Alberta Business School (My application has been forwarded to the FGSR). I have a deadline to accept offer from Ted Rogers by 23rd March 2018. I have the following concerns:
1. If I were to compare both the above mentioned business schools, which stands better in respect to employment opportunities in the consulting domain after graduation? Ted Rogers being in Toronto and Alberta Business School being in Edmonton, Alberta. Overall, which has better prospects including the location?
2. Ted Rogers has 16 month FT MBA course whereas Alberta Business School has 20 months FT MBA course. How does length of course make a difference and does the length of study really matter in respect to my first concern?
3. Lastly, do companies really look at which business school have I graduated from, if I am looking for internships or FT work after study.
(I have 5 years of experience in consulting and automation)
This response is purely based on what people told me, specially my friends already in Canada with an MBA. There are lot of pros and cons in going to Alberta or even Ryerson. Employment opportunities depend on lot of factors being in Toronto is a great advantage but you need to network well in Canada for serious consulting jobs. If you want some job in Canada you’ll make it at Ryerson but it’s your choice what to accept. Alberta has a strong alumni, it’s a much older program than Ted Rogers so you could literally network across Canada for jobs. With Ryerson I doubt if you’ll find anyone outside of Ontario on the alumni. Also, you may find UAlberta alumni in senior management levels CEOs and CFOs in big consulting firms, TRSM is a new program alumni would have hardly got into such positions in such firms unless they are entrepreneurs.
Also, if your looking to specialise in technology related fields Ryerson is better, since it’s structure is very aligned to this. If your interest is in finance , marketing or international business, Ryerson might not be the best place.
Alberta pnp is a little less competitive than Ontario, so PR process would be easier in Alberta.
Lastly, based on what my friends studying in tier 2 MBAs in Canada have told, ranking matter but Ryerson is well known and reputed in Toronto it shouldn’t be a problem to apply for jobs in Toronto, but outside Toronto it might not be known well as they are hardly featured in B school rankings.
