Congrats on your admits! Fantastic job! your family should hopefully be very proud of you!

You are very accomplished for being only 24!
KF does have a good foothold in Healthcare as well so perhaps there is a good convergence but IB is often very competitive unless you network your way in. I think politely dropping in somewhere that you are the first person in your family to attend college/Bschool will get you some recognition because it is hard to break through some of those barriers and esp the folk who benefited from a comfortable background will feel inspired to be a part of your journey.

P.S. I like Tepper. They did very well in the US news rankings gaining 3 ponts. They totally gamed the system (in a good way) and I admire that!

Thank you so much for the kind words! That gave a smile today. Glad to hear both schools are strong- would you say at this point it boils down to personal fit? It sounds like both schools would give me the tools to ultimately make a career pivot into IB. I'm currently in negotiation with scholarships from Tepper, but KF would be roughly sticker price.

IB is hard to count on (you definitely need a plan B) but if KF is placing that many people (impressive!) then I would definitely consider them strongly. Also with KF healthcare connection, you do have a plan B potentially in the shadows. Nobody wants to fall back on plan B but it is a lot better when you have it rather than scramble.

Hey - congrats on Tepper and KF - 2 great schools! I agree with the other posters, UNC is quite strong in IB, and as a current 2nd year, I know a ton of my classmates who interned in IB at BoA, Well Fargo, Piper, Barclays and JP. There are more but that is just what I know from the top of my head. Also, Charlotte is a major finance hub that UNC basically owns but we do send a lot to Mid-Atlantic and NE. I'm sure Tepper is strong too, but finance at UNC is definitely underappreciated, especially with the student managed fund that doesn't get talked about nearly enough. Lastly, in addition to IB strength, UNC is definitely one of the premier healthcare schools too just in case you ever do decide to pivot. Plan A and Plan B is crucial. Can't go wrong with either though!

Hello GMATClub,

I would greatly appreciate some feedback from this community as it has helped me immensely so far in my journey. I've been very lucky to receive admission from Tepper and Kenan-Flagler and am stuck on what to decide. Any outside opinions would be greatly considered.

Background:

Low income, first generation American 24M, Consortium member (not the fellowship), with STEM background. I have 7 years total in chemical and healthcare research- my promotion a year and a half ago has placed me in a more finance-oriented role within a major hospital. I would like to pivot into IB- preferably in healthcare/biotech as that is my background.

CMU Tepper Thoughts:
- One of the first schools I've reached out to & connected with 4 people in the GFA club that transitioned into healthcare oriented banking
- Very pleasant student body/culture (I don't get finance bro vibes)
- I appreciate the quant heavy curriculum
- This school definitely feels like a rising star (#16 in 2022 US News ranking)
- 14 banks came to campus last year during COVID (virtual); GFA club seems to adequately prep students for recruiting timeline
- My biggest hesitation for Tepper is its strength in tech, not finance (9/10 total people recruited into IB last year). Although IB seems definitely doable and it's a relief to have spoken to numerous people that secured internships/full time positions from non-finance backgrounds for the SF/NYC area

Kenan-Flagler Thoughts:
- Much larger IB presence & benefits from proximity to Fuqua. Sends ~27 people to IB a year
- Nicer weather (I've been in Mid-Altantic/New England most of my life)
- Student body/culture feels very professional
- The student run Private Equity fund seems like a great opportunity for my post-MBA goals that I wouldn't find in many other T15s/T20s
- Free bus system, cheaper rents, and I have 2 friends at UNC which would help with the transition
- Ranking has remained #20, but it has a consistent track record for pumping out IB students to NYC each year

1) I voted for UNCKF ... and it wasn't a particularly hard choice ... for the reasons mentioned throughout this thread.

2) If you've not decided, the two links in my signature block below might help. If you have decided, we'd love to hear. :)

Thank you very much! After reaching out to a few clubs, I ended up choosing Kenan-Flagler :)

Hey Guys!

I'm in a similar boat this year. I'm a (social) semiconductor hardware engineer from the Bay Area (born and raised) who's looking to pivot to IB.

I'm choosing between UNC KFBS and CMU Tepper (with UCLA FEMBA as my safety) before 22-May.

Is it possible to shed light on the options for non-banking careers out of each institution? I'm thinking of choosing CMU Tepper because I can have a strong and stable career back in tech sales/finance. I'm extremely well connected in the bay area and would like to end up in either SF/NYC/LA

Any thoughts as to Tepper's 5% in IB vs UNC's 11%? It seems Tepper really is jumping in the rankings going into Fall 2022.

Thanks!
