If use the negate choice E. It will be:

e) ALL consumers who drink Mango Paradise will eventually experience serious cardiac problems. => not weaken.

If you negate choice C, it will weaken the argument.

+1 C

If a concentration of 5% is dangerous, but the cans only contain 2.5% of that substance, we could not conclude that Mango Paradise is dangerous.

We need to assume that at least 2.5% is dangerous.

Consumer Advocate: The new soft drink, Mango Paradise, contains at least 2.5% of Ephedra, a chemical supplement that stimulates the activity of the nervous system but may also result in serious cardiac problems. Therefore, this drink is harmful to consumer health and should be banned from distribution in our state.

Which of the following is an assumption made by the consumer advocate?
A)The new soft drink will soon be introduced into mass production.
b)Consumers are unlikely to enjoy the taste of Mango Paradise because of the high amount of Ephedra contained in the drink.
c)Any drink that contains at least 2.5% of Ephedra is harmful to consumer health.
d)The Consumer Advocate is not affiliated with the producer of Mango Paradise.
e)Most consumers who drink Mango Paradise will eventually experience serious cardiac problems.

+1 for C. Option D is clearly wrong. It does not have any relevance with the stem.

Friends,

Ephedra, has certain harm associated if taken at a certain dosage. here the concerned person assumes that at least 2.5% of consumption can harm in some way. C is the OA.
Option is incorrect because of only 1 word "MOST".

premise- Mango Paradise, contains at least 2.5% of Ephedra, a chemical supplement that stimulates the activity of the nervous system but may also result in serious cardiac problems.
conclusion- Therefore, this drink is harmful to consumer health and should be banned.

Which of the following is an assumption made by the consumer advocate?
A)The new soft drink will soon be introduced into mass production.....NOT OF CONCERN
b)Consumers are unlikely to enjoy the taste of Mango Paradise because of the high amount of Ephedra contained in the drink.IRRELEVANT
c)Any drink that contains at least 2.5% of Ephedra is harmful to consumer health...CORRECT....2.5 % OF Ephedra CAN LEAD TO CARDIAC PROBLEMS.
d)The Consumer Advocate is not affiliated with the producer of Mango Paradise....DOES'NT AFFECT THE CONCLUSION
e)Most consumers who drink Mango Paradise will eventually experience serious cardiac problems...AN OVERSTATEMENT.

I think the Answer here should be C if we Negate Option C that Any drink that contains at least 2.5% of Ephedra is not harmful to consumer health., this weakens the conclusion of the argument and it falls apart so Option C is correct while others dont weaken the conclusion.

Thanks

The contenders are C and E. However the argument never says that most consumers WILL eventually develop cardiac problems, it says MAY develop, so E is out. IMO its C.

Hey !
According to me answer has to be "C".

a)The new soft drink will soon be introduced into mass production. - we are not concerned with when the drink is going into production- Eliminate

b)Consumers are unlikely to enjoy the taste of Mango Paradise because of the high amount of Ephedra contained in the drink. Negate the argument and it says "Consumers are likely to enjoy the taste of Mango Paradise because of the high amount of Ephedra contained in the drink"
this will strengthen the argument.(Remember when you negate the Assumption the conclusion should fall apart)- Eliminate

c)Any drink that contains at least 2.5% of Ephedra is harmful to consumer health.Negate it "not all drink that contain at least 2.5% of Ephedra are harmful to consumer health" - the conclusion falls apart - Correct

d)The Consumer Advocate is not affiliated with the producer of Mango Paradise. Not concerned with this option at all

e)Most consumers who drink Mango Paradise will eventually experience serious cardiac problems. Negate it "Most consumers who drink Mango Paradise will not eventually experience serious cardiac problems" well the Drink can still stimulate the activity of the nervous system . Eliminate

Dear egmat,

Can you please explain how to apply egmat negation technique here.
c)Any drink that contains at least 2.5% of Ephedra is harmful to consumer health.

All(100) drinks that contains at least 2.5% of Ephedra is harmful to consumer health.
Negation statement- Not all(0-99) drinks that contains at least 2.5% of Ephedra is harmful to consumer health.

if we consider '0 drinks that contains at least 2.5% of Ephedra is harmful to consumer health'.- conclusion falls
99 drinks that contains at least 2.5% of Ephedra is harmful to consumer health - supports conclusion

for Option E Most consumers who drink Mango Paradise will eventually experience serious cardiac problems

(51-100)consumers who drink Mango Paradise will eventually experience serious cardiac problems
negation statement - (0-50)consumers who drink Mango Paradise will eventually experience serious cardiac problems

0 consumers who drink Mango Paradise will eventually experience serious cardiac problems (conclusion falls)
50 consumers who drink Mango Paradise will eventually experience serious cardiac problems (this also supports conclusion but not as much as choice 'C')
I felt very difficult on chosing C/E

Please advise

But the conclusion is talking about negative effects of the component and hence to be banned and cardiac arrest is a negative effect that could cause due to the chemical element in the soft drink.
So negating the option E does break the conclusion.

Stimulating the nervous system is a positive effect so it does not effect the conclusion much as that of cardiac arrest.

I also agree that Option C is a good contender, but can some one please explain why Option E is better than Option C.

Answer is c)Any drink that contains at least 2.5% of Ephedra is harmful to consumer health.

Any drink that contains atleast 2.5% ephedra is harmful, Mango Paradise contains atleast 2.5% therefore harmful

E is not right because, What if consumers develop cardiac problems because of something else ?

Anything that says when negated : Drink is not harmful.
Now contains at least 2.5% of Ephedra, a chemical supplement that stimulates the activity of the nervous system but may also result in serious cardiac problems. => this premise is not clear about the amount responsible for cardiac problem. lets say, cardiac problem happens below 2.5% of Ephedra, in that case the conclusion stands wrong.

Which of the following is an assumption made by the consumer advocate?

c)Any drink that contains at least 2.5% of Ephedra is harmful to consumer health.
Any drink that contains at least 2.5% of Ephedra is not harmful to consumer health. This is in line with our prethinking.

e)Most consumers who drink Mango Paradise will eventually experience serious cardiac problems.
Only few consumers who drink will eventually experience serious cardiac problems. Still, drink is harmful.

So C.

this is a classic example of generalization from a sample, so we need to make sure what is true for one drink, it is true for all other different drinks as well, choice C does exactly that

can we conclude from one drink sample that this chemical is dangerous? it might be possible that this mango drink itself contains some harmful chemical and it may cause the heart attack .
choice c says that all other drinks containing this chemical can cause the heart attack, means this chemical is alone responsible for the attack
