Notes - 2 Points for Today
C.R.

1. In a Strengthening Question, Ruling Out an alternative explanation can also be a valid answer.

eg. Stripped-down Argument -> Oldways school asks students to submit handwritten assignment papers while Modernways school asks students to type the assignment papers. Avg. GPA Oldways < Avg GPA Modernways. Therefore, schools should encourage students to type assignments.

Strengthen -> Students in Oldways and Modernways school have same Avg IQ and socioeconomic background.

CR & RC
2. Spotting a trap answer: If you can see one of the options coming alive in your head, IT most probably IS A TRAP!

Ok. So, today was a surprise. I have hit a wall. I didn't anticipate that economist has provided access to only 10% of their total course material in free trial. So, it means that I've completed 10% revision in 7 study hours with almost all the emphasis on CR & RC.

Though I might not follow their RC Strategy, I HAVE learned 1 important thing about reading the RC. Something that every prep company suggests and every student aspires to do but only few crack the code. Read the Structure of the passage rather than the Data. I just learned how to do so. I had been doing it wrong thus far.

We should not read the sentence but understand what the author is trying to imply in the sentence. Why he/she has written that particular sentence and bonus points for understanding why is that particular information given at this exact point. In other words, we have to connect summary of each useful sentence with that of previous and next useful sentence to create a single coherent summary of the entire paragraph and the passage. It would save time and make questions like primary purpose of passage and function of paragraph a cake-walk. Rest of the questions will take usual amount of time.

Hence, this event calls for an addendum in the Basic Minimum Daily Study Plan/Strategy

1. Read 1 Article on Economist.com
2. Revise material on gmat tutor of economist for 1 week spending about 5 hours a day from books available i.e. Manhattan SC and Veritas.
3. Take a Nutritious Diet
4. Exercise for at least 20 minutes
5. Make notes of new material learned.

Attempted all questions on MY Workbook and about 20 more in the forums. Realized that I am not too comfortable in quant. Need to revise all the concepts at the earliest.

Read 1 useful tip. Whenever you find something important or something that you need to remember, write it down in a notebook with a pen. Do not write that note in the book. Do not post that note online. Do so if you want to but DO WRITE IT DOWN IN THE NOTEBOOK AS WELL.

Log: Revised all the concepts in Veritas' arithmetics and attempted a total of 10 questions in My Workbook (of gmatclub). By gmatclub's estimate, I should get 620 with Q 42 & V 33. I need to revise all the concepts and get to practice question sets at the earliest to boost up these scores to a realistic level.

Time Spent Studying: 2 Hrs

Log: Entered Phase 2 of revision. Attempted about 50 questions in quant and verbal - 10 on gmatclub and 40 in Veritas Arithmetics book. I have been reading daily 1 article on The Economist's - The World in 2017 app. Today I read 2 and started attempting 1 RC from OG 16 1st thing in the morning. I'll steadily increase this number of daily RCs and Economist articles to 3 or 4. Every article in the app has some good sentences, which would help me in SC, and the flow of logic is similar to official questions, though currently I am not concentrating too much on this. Additionally, I have started writing down notes in the notebook.

Everything said and done, I have realized that even though my revision speed is not as fast as I had projected, my learning and development is pretty solid. I have realized a bunch of zones in the "easy" topics where difficult questions can be formed. I have already posted 1 and will post the rest in the days to come with the second one in the list here

It has been a few days since I posted my log. Unfortunately, I could not study for past 2 days.

Time Spent Studying: 4 Hrs till 10pm.

Log: Revised and practiced Inference and Paradox questions. Completed rest of 70 questions in Veritas' Arithmetic Book and 80questions in gmatclub workbook. Planning to revise Algebra in next 2 hours and resume writing notes in the notebook.

Concept realized: In CR give special attention to the question asked when the stimulus/option has a tricky language. Tricky Language - Double Negatives, contrapositives, repeated use of same word such as Not All/Some/Most, and so on.

I needed CATs to practice. So, I was planning to buy kaplan's Q-Bank with 8 CATs worth $199. I found out, today, that I will get 5 additional CATs with Kaplan Premier. So, I went to the distributor and bought 2 books - Kaplan Premier and 800 at 30% discount. Now, even if I buy Official Question Pack, I would save money while gaining 6 practice tests with similar amount of questions. But this time about 500 of them will be official questions. :)

Time Spent Studying: 4 Hrs.

Log: Checked out CR in Kaplan Premier. I have a strong feeling that this book will help me cut down the time I spend on easy CR questions because after every topic, there are 8 to 10 dedicated questions. I have also come across 5 books by Aristotle - SC, CR, & RC Grail 2017, Big Idioms, and Boldface.

I have been maintaining my daily study quota, more or less, but after collecting so much material within a day, I am now confused thinking how to go about it. List of all the Material -

Study Material Available:
01. Complete Set of Veritas Books - Solved Last time.
02. SC and Advanced Quant Books of Manhattan - Used Last time.
03. OG 16 + Quant and Verbal Reviews - Solved Last time.
04. Powerscore CR - Used Last time.
05. Aristotle - SC Grail - Used Last time
06. About 30 pdf by eGmat - Used Last time
07. Aristotle - SC Grail 2017 - New
08. Aristotle - CR Grail 2017 - New
09. Aristotle - RC Grail 2017 - New
10. Kaplan Premier 2017 - New
11. Kaplan 800 - New

Planning to buy
1. I have 39 Kudos. So, I'll buy GC tests for 3 months.
2. GMAC Official Question Pack.

Plan to handle this Study Material

1. Complete all the Veritas books and SC Manhattan - They will help me re-gain basic understanding of all the concepts.
2. Complete OG 16 to consolidate the basic concepts. Quant and Verbal Review are Pretty Easy books. Skip them.
3. Go through Kaplan Premier. It will help me understand the Strategic Flaws in attempting the questions.
4. Complete Kaplan 800 and GMAC Official Question Pack to Iron-Out the flaws found in the previous step.

Backup Study Material - Aristotle Grails
Backup Question Sets - Gmatclub membership

Time Spent Studying: 3

Log: I have a lot of material to cover and hence I should break down my revision into bite-size chunks to complete it faster. So, I woke up 1/2 hour early today, read the article in Economist' The World in 2017 app, and attempted 1 RC from OG 16. I took my Veritas CR Book to Office to revise when I get time and am going to keep it there till I complete the theory in it. On Gmatclub, I practiced the questions in workbook.

I created and posted a PS question here

Current GC SCORE Estimate: 610. Q 38; V 36.
Target till Sunday (05-07-17): Q 40+; V 36+

Log: Revised CR from Veritas (at Office) and gmatclub and realized that I tend to lose the track of question when one of the answer options is worded in a difficult manner. So, I should re-read the question stem if any option warrants my deeper attention. It may be placed as a trap.

Revised Veritas Algebra's Skill Builder. It has a lot of small questions that are good to improve basic calculation speed.

Update to Weekly Target: Apparently, I have achieved my Weekly Target within 1 day of posting it. My GMAT SCORE Estimate is: 640, Q 41; V 37. This raises a big question - Did I set a target too easy?

Anyways, it is Thursday today and I am still 4 study days away from New Week. So, I need a new Target.

Addendum to Weekly Target:

Current GC Score Estimate: 640 -> Q 41, V 37.
Target till Sunday (05-07-17): Q >= 43, V >= 38.

Weekly Target Update

Target Achieved - Q 45; V 41

Yes, I am surprised to see V 41. It is a BIG jump.

Target for the Week ending on 5-14-17

Q and V estimates are more than I expected to reach. So for this week, I am going to make it easy for myself. Maintain these numbers.

i.e.

Q 45
V 41
