D) Because of Judge Roesmarie’s decision released post-independence day allowing the city of Detroit to file

E) Because Judge Roesmarie’s decision released post-independence day to allow the city of Detroit to file

The answer is D

We need because of because the subject is Roesmarie’s decision and we also need infinitive of purpose i.e to
A use of that is wrong it should be to
B with is wrong also filing is wrong
C Although the sentence is grammatically correct but the meaning has changed there is cause and effect relationship
D correct
E We need because of

E) Because Judge Roesmarie’s decision released post-independence day to allow the city of Detroit to file

Correct idiom is "allow X to Y". Hence eliminate A and B.

In C, the sentence will be:
Judge Roesmarie’s decision was released post-independence day, allowing the city of Detroit to file for bankruptcy on grounds of an organization’s constitutional rights, the 10,000 current city workers and the 20,000 retired workers found that their pensions, earlier thought to have been as secure as treasury bonds, were cut in half.

The independent clause "the 10,000 current city workers..." has no conjunction with the previous. Hence, this sentence is fragment.

In E, the first clause lacks of main verb.

D is correct.

In option D, is the use of 'because of correct' ?
shouldn't it rather be because instead of because of?

Hi broall,
Please help me to understand why is E incorrect. We have released as a verb in he first clause. Released is not a past participle. Also, I find the construction "post-independence day allowing" WRONG. it seems that "post- independence day" is ALLOWING

Ok, got it. The decision was released is a verb. The decision released is a modifier. Thanks

Hi , I'm not expert in this , but i think 'released' is acting as a participle here
consider this example

1) She estimated the temperature
2) Temperature estimated to be 40 c

In 1) estimated is acting as Verb as She(Subject) has done estimation of temp.
but in 2)estimated is acting as a participle because temp cant do estimation by itself

So Back to our question ,here in E) 'Released' is acting as participle'

and for your other question that 'Allowing' is modifying post independence day , im also curious to know the answer

Happy to get corrected if wrong

Thought it is too late, still the answer to question raised by buan15
D means that a judge released her decision post independence therefore blah blah happened
E means that since judge's decision released post independence day therefore blah blah happened
Both of them have a difference while D talks about the action by a person, E talks about timing of that action.
E changes the intended meaning of the sentence.

Narrows down to D & E because of the correct usage of idiom "to allow".

Split between "because" and "because of", "because of" is used when followed by noun/pronoun whereas "because" states reason and is followed by a clause. E lacks main verb, D on the other hand correctly uses "because of" and "to allow", and has "released" and "allowing" as modifier phrases. C lacks correct structure of independent clause; independent clause.

I do not think this question is good because "decision released post-independence day" does not have a clear meaning.
Since Knewton no longer has its business in gmat, nobody can check the official answer.
