I took my first GMAT attempt on July 18 and scored a miserable 590 (Q42,V29) .
Many reasons could be a part of this from being sick a week prior to exam date to not getting enough time to practice due to circumstances at work place. I had studied for 1-1.5 months and given the exam .

Materials I had used were Manhattan Books for Quants and SC and miscellaneous youtube videos to understand certains concepts wherever needed followed by practice questions on GMAT Club . Big thanks to all GMAT Club experts and Guides for providing the necessary and adequate material for the Preparation .

Was expecting a Q45+ , also while solving the quant questions I felt the questions were not very difficult . did not get any Combinatoric/probability question .
Gmat Prep Exam 1 – 1st july 22 - 590
Gmat Prep Exam 2 – 11th july 22 – 640
Also attempted a couple of other free mocks and attained scores ranging from 580-680 .
A few days prior to exam I felt I had not improved much on RC , and this gave me anxiety while attempting RC on the real exam .

Target score – 720+
Planning to apply in – Sept 2024
Target Schools –M7

I have attached my ESR report , any advice will be highly appreciated . Looking to get help to understand the ESR and figure out points to focus on . Also what other sources other than the official guides should I select while practing questions on GMAT Club. Looking forward to my next attempt in first week of October .

Hi AnandRB.

You've done some nice work in some areas of quant and in SC. Now, you have to keep going, by continuing to improve in those areas and also strengthening the areas that you haven't made as much progress in.

In verbal, you can see that your work on SC has paid off. To increase your verbal score enough to get to your goal, you now have to achieve similar results in CR and RC by putting in similar amounts of work, which should include learning key strategies for the various CR and RC question types, learning how to analyze the choices, and doing topic-focused practice.

How to Score High on GMAT Verbal

Regarding quant, your ESR indicates that you have to work on DS in general. Probably, you can increase your quant score a few points just by getting better at DS.

Also, there are some specific areas of quant that you have to strengthen, such as Geometry and, likely, Number Properties, among others. So, your move in quant is to just keep working on one area at a time to continue to drive your quant score higher.

To get a clear sense the types of section scores you have to get to achieve a 720+ section score, you could see this GMAT score chart. Probably, you should shoot for at least 48 in quant - 49+ would be ideal - and get the rest of the way to 720+ by increasing your verbal score.

Hi Anand,

Many GMATers spend 3 months (or more) of consistent study time before they hit their 'peak' scores, so if you studied for just 1 - 1.5 months, then it's likely that you simply have not put in enough time an effort to have scored higher yet. By extension, you will likely continue to improve as you continue to study - but you will have to make some significant improvements to how you 'see' (and respond to) BOTH the Quant and Verbal sections before you will be able to consistently score 720+.

Before I can offer you the specific advice that you’re looking for - as well as an analysis of your ESR - it would help if you could provide a bit more information on how you've been studying and your goals:

1) How many hours did you typically study each week?
2) What were the Quant and Verbal Scaled Scores for each of your CATs/mocks?
3) For your next attempt, are you planning to take the At-home GMAT or are you planning to take your GMAT at a Test Facility?

Based on your ESR, your RC is the weakest of the 3 sub-sections. You also spend the most time on average on it. Consider regularly reading similar articles from the Economist, working on a methodology that promotes absorption. Check whether you are correctly interpreting the meaning of the sentences. It might be good to work with a study buddy as well.

Sir thank you for the brief analysis .
On the first GMAT Prep Mock in which I got a 590 , my sectional scores were Q44 , V27
and on the 2nd GMAT Prep Mock I got a 640 my sectional scores were Q47 , V32 .


Sir I must have studied roughly 18-20 Hrs in a week , I am working 6 days a week . So sunday is the only time where I am able to get adequate time .

I am planning to take my next attempt in first week of october , have not decided if I am going to take it online or at the center . The first exam I gave it at a test center .

Another thing I would Like to know is , should I stick to any particular year OG guides or practice from GMAT club by selecting official guides (basically questions from guides of all years) on gmat club .

Also please suggest good free mock which I can attempt to have an idea if there is any improvement in my level of understanding and skillset in both quant and verbal .
