Peter7
Hello,
I recently took a free test in mba oficial web page, and I got a score of 340, expecting at least 400. I took the test just a little cold, because I spent almost 3 weeks preparing with a Manhattan book "Foundations of GMAT Math", just the basic math.
A little description of me, I am a 29 years old lawyer in Latin America, so I have rarely seen math in my life since high school, and I am not a native English speaker, although I have very little problems reading English. And now I think that an MBA in United States would be a good career path.
On quant I got Q13. I think the main problem was time, because just could answer 17 questions. 2 minutes per question is a lot for me at the moment. I think this is a "computing problem" as I read.
On verbal I got V21. I think I can improve with more study and strategies.
Integrated reasoning was new to me, and I just got 3 questions correct. I know I need a lot of practice, and I think I can improve.
My original plan was to study 4 months with
Manhattan Prep material after the first diagnostic test. 2 months to read all the content and the exercises, and now I plan to add each weekend some practice tests just to get comfortable with the pression of time, and 2 months of review and mock tests. Approximately 4 hours on weeks and 6 on weekends
Is it plausible to improve from 340 to 700+ in 4 months? Do you know some other strategies to improve m study or to get comfortable with the pressure of time?
Thank you very much in advance.
Hi Peter7,
Do not take this score too seriously as it's just to assess your current level. Before you start preparing for any test, it's important to understand the structure of the test, what is tested on it and then prepare accordingly. In this case, GMAT is a test which focuses on your application skills along with the conceptual knowledge. So, just learning the concepts and practicing questions without focusing on the right methodology will not do any good. So, I suggest you to first focus on the methodology to solve questions of a particular topic and only then move to practicing questions of that topic.
How to prepare for GMAT in the right way?
So, the right way to prepare would be to first
- Deal with one topic at a time
- learn the concepts of a topic
- learn the right methodology to solve questions of that topic
- practice a few questions of that topic making sure that you use the right methodology to solve questions
- Repeat the process for all the topics
And working on weak areas is equally important. You move to the next topic only if you get a decent accuracy in the previous topic. If not, you revisit the concepts, fill the conceptual gaps and then move to the next topic only when you are 100% confident. You can go through the articles below to understand the approach in a better way.
And you can go through the recording below to understand how to strategize your GMAT prep in an effective way.
And I suggest you to choose a standard resource which can help you prepare for GMAT in the right way. As GMAT is a test of application of concepts, make sure to choose an application focused course. A course with an integrated study plan will suit you the best. You can go through the article below to understand the right way to choose the online course.
I can help you in a much better way if you can give me a little more background about yourself and your prep strategy. I would love to get in touch over a call with you and discuss the same. You can schedule a call with me using the link below.
