Hi Cathal93,

To start, this 680 is a solid Overall Score (and a massive improvement over your initial 440 practice CAT Score from 5.5 months ago!) - so you should be proud of this achievement. In your prior posts, you noted a number of CAT results - and this Q42 is right in-line with most of those prior Scores (meaning that you may have developed some 'bad habits' during your earlier studies that are keeping you from scoring higher). The V40 is a fantastic performance in the Verbal section - but it appears to be only the 2nd time that you've scored at that level (so I wouldn't take this result as a 'given' just yet). Did you take any additional CATs/mocks besides the ones that you listed in your prior posts?

While the ESR doesn’t provide a lot of information, there are usually a few data points that we can use to define what went wrong on Test Day (and what you should work on to score higher). If you purchased the ESR, then I'll be happy to analyze it for you (and you can feel free to PM or email it directly to me).

Hi everyone,

I sat the GMAT last Saturday, February 5, 2022. I'm normally a very good test taker, but for whatever reason in this instance I was overcome by nerves. I completed the AWA and IR first (both went perfectly fine, I got a 6 and 7 respectively). But I could not shake off my nerves when it came to Quant. I know I messed up the first two questions and it just spiraled from there. I scored a Q42 (significantly lower than my two most recent GMAT exam scores of 48 and 49). For verbal, I was able to settle into it and scored a V40, which is right about where I had been tracking in my practice exams.

I signed up this week for Math Revolution and will be utilizing a private tutor to grow more confident in my quant from now until I retake the exam in ~2 months.

My concern is interestingly about my verbal. I worked pretty hard on verbal in the weeks leading up to my exam last Friday. The issue I have now is that I've almost exhausted all OG verbal questions and I've taken all 6 GMAC practice exams. What advice would you have to maintain (or even slightly improve) my verbal score from now until my GMAT retake?

I have already downloaded my ESR and it's for sure helpful, I just would love any additional advice from the forum.

Also, what advice would you have as it relates to dealing with nerves on the exam? I can't explain enough how much of a factor anxiety became. At one point I struggled to do even basic math and to stay focussed.

Any help—as always—would be much appreciated!

Hi Cathal93,

A 680 with a V40 is a great score. However, there is still room for improvement if you can identify and work on your weak areas. If you have an ESR with you, that will be even more helpful to get the insights about your performance.

Here are a few links that you may find helpful:

You can also get some tips from Hardik's journey who scored a GMAT 740 (Q48, V44):

Hi Cathal93,

The key for you is identifying your key gaps in both advanced concepts and, equally importantly, test taking skills. The GMAT is unlike any other test you've take in Math or English and it tests your reasoning skills in multiple ways that require specific and focused approaches to overcome when you're aiming above 700.

The key is the identify your critical gaps in Test Taking Skills and Advance Concepts in both Q and V. We do that in FREE 90 minute Diagnostic Session in which an experienced GMAT performance coach takes you through a simulated practice test -- which isolates all the gaps that are causing timing issues, anxiety and underperformance of practice test results on test day.

Let me know if you're interested.

Hi Cathal93.

For more verbal practice, I'm sure you can find more official questions that you haven't seen yet. For instance, since you've taken the six official practice tests, you could use questions from the practice tests that you haven't seen. For instance, the first two official practice tests have hundreds of verbal questions in their banks of which you've seen only 72. People have assembled lists of these questions that you can find online.

Also, on mba.com, there are two sets of Official Practice questions that you could purchase.

Also, some third-party, i.e., test prep company, verbal questions are pretty good. So, you could use those too.

For some ideas on how to use the questions to increase your score, see these posts.
