Among the challenges faced by translators are
whether to keep their translation as close as possible to the original source
, or
whether to take liberties that may allow an intended audience to better understand its content.

There is a choice between 2 alternative action, therefore, singular is should be used. Option A, B & D are out.
C is closer in meaning to the original sentence , E is out.

Quote:
(A) faced by translators are whether to keep their translation as close as possible to the original source
Use of plural are is incorrect since the two alternative choices are separated by Or. Incorrect

Quote:
(B) that translators face are whether to keep their translation of the original source as close as possible
Use of plural are is incorrect since the two alternative choices are separated by Or. Incorrect

Quote:
(C) faced by translators is whether to keep their translation as close as possible to the original source
Use of singular is is correct since the two alternative choices are separated by Or
Whether to keep their translation as close as possible to the original source conveys the meaning of original sentence.
Correct

Quote:
(D) that translators face are whether to keep their translation as close as possible to the original source
Use of plural are is incorrect since the two alternative choices are separated by Or. Incorrect

Quote:
(E) that translators face is whether to keep their translation of the original source as close as possible
The meaning of original sentence is changed.
Whether to keep their translation as close as possible to the original source conveys the meaning of original sentence.
But whether to keep their translation of the original source as close as possible changes the meaning to keeping translation as close as possible.
Incorrect

The use of 'is' is required with the singulr subject 'whether something or the other is preferred'. So reject A, B, D. Choice E lacks proper comparison because it does not state what it should be as close as possible to. Hence choice C

I think verb should be 'is', not 'are'; among challenges, two challenges are expressed in sentence in which both of them are separate by 'or'; so each challenge act as singular
hence correct choice - C
A - 'are' should be 'is'
B - 'are' should be 'is'; also it has meaning issue
D - same as A
E - it has meaning issue

(A) faced by translators are whether to keep their translation as close as possible to the original source
--> Passive voice makes this look like a fragment. A better option is available.

(B) that translators face are whether to keep their translation of the original source as close as possible
--> incorrect ending of statement with 'as close as possible'

(C) faced by translators is whether to keep their translation as close as possible to the original source
--> use of 'is' is incorrect

(D) that translators face are whether to keep their translation as close as possible to the original source
--> Active voice construction. Looks good

(E) that translators face is whether to keep their translation of the original source as close as possible
--> incorrect ending of statement with 'as close as possible'

IMHO Option D

Answer C

It is a single challenge among other challenges, to decide whether to keep their translation as close as possible to the original source, or whether to take liberties that may allow an intended audience to better understand its content. So, we can eliminate A, B, and D.

C) Seems fine to me. whether to keep the translation as close as possible to something (original source)
E) that translators face is whether to keep their translation of the original source as close as possible... But as close as possible to what? We can not refer back to the original source here. Hence, E is not correct.

Among the challenges faced by translators are whether to keep their translation as close as possible to the original source, or whether to take liberties that may allow an intended audience to better understand its content.

(A) faced by translators are whether to keep their translation as close as possible to the original source

This option is incorrect. Among the challenges faced by translators should be followed by (is)

(B) that translators face are whether to keep their translation of the original source as close as possible

This option is incorrect.. The phrase [as close as possible] should be followed by an object.

(C) faced by translators is whether to keep their translation as close as possible to the original source

Parallelism is maintained... <<Among the challenges faced by translators>> is followed by (is). keep it as contender

(D) that translators face are whether to keep their translation as close as possible to the original source

Same problem as in Option A. This option is incorrect.

(E) that translators face is whether to keep their translation of the original source as close as possible

Same problem as in Option B. This option is incorrect.

IMO: Choice C

Answer: A

Subject 'challenges' will require plural verb 'are'. This eliminates option C and E.
Option B and E, as per the meaning its not clear translation to be kept as close as possible to what. Also with this it looks like the original source is in parallel with non-underlined portion (later part) which doesn't make sense.
Between option A and D, A is more direct with "challenges faced by translators" compared to "challenges that translators face".
Hence A

This question is testing us on Subject Verb Agreement with a few confusing aspects attached to it to make it difficult
Among is generally used to indicate one of many but can be used with both singular and plural verb forms depending on the situation of the sentence
For ex:
Among those arrested is Mick Aneth
Among my hobbies are swimming, math and travelling
So, you can see that if the latter part of the sentence involves multiple items or things with Among, then use the plural form, else the singular form of the verb

Coming back to the question, here we have Among the challenges faced by translators, how do we determine whether to use is/are with this? We see the latter part of the question. It mentions whether to do this OR do another thing. So basically, we are dealing with a single challenge either this way or the other way, so we will use the singular form of the verb

With that decided, we can ELIMINATE options A, B and D

Between options C and E, E changes the intended meaning of the sentence so we ELIMINATE E

Answer - C

Among the challenges faced by translators are whether to keep their translation as close as possible to the original source, or whether to take liberties that may allow an intended audience to better understand its content.

(A) faced by translators are whether to keep their translation as close as possible to the original source -
(B) that translators face are whether to keep their translation of the original source as close as possible
(C) faced by translators is whether to keep their translation as close as possible to the original source
(D) that translators face are whether to keep their translation as close as possible to the original source
(E) that translators face is whether to keep their translation of the original source as close as possible

My answer is D. I suppose that "that" needs in this sentence. Thus, remaining B, D and E. The choice D saves the intended meaning and the smooth structure. In B, the intended meaning is slightly altered - hence, Wrong. E has grammatical error - "is"

Answer C

First split is vs are - only one challenge is being talked about. Hence "is" would be appropriate here. A, B and D are out.
Between C & E - E does not clearly state "as close as possible" to what? C is the CORRECT answer

B and E are out because it fails to complete the sentence "as close as possible". We are not sure "as close as possible" to what?
A, B and D are out because "whether to...or to..." is singular, so "are" is incorrect.

Answer is C as it is clear as intended without any grammar issues.

Is is the case of reverse subject. Singular is preferred over plural.
Eliminate A,B, D
Between C and E, I chose C because as close as is correctly placed after the translation
