Hi

After studying for 6 weeks plus , I'm still stuck on 600. I was aiming for 700-720. I have enough time to study on a day-to-day basis but I'm unable to pinpoint where the issue is. I have tried solving multiple questions but aimless practice is getting me nowhere. Can someone please help me strategize as I'm unable to understand what steps to take to get my desired score.

Hi all,

I have been studying for about 3 months for the GMAT now; the first month I didn't study consistently but the last 2 months I have been studying for about 30 hours/weekly.
I am pretty frustrated, as my scores are not improving. I took quant classes but I am still struggling, especially with the quant results. I will take the GMAT in 2 weeks and my goal was a 700+ score. Currently, I am scoring around 500 with Q30 V29.
The verbal scores are in the 29-32 range and the quant scores in the 29-30 range. I know that it is almost impossible to improve the score by 200 points in 2 weeks and will probably have to delay the business school applications but I am ashamed and worried that I am not able to improve my scores.

Can anyone help me with a solid 3 months study plan to reach the 700+ mark?

Thanks a lot.

Hi. Sorry about the challenge. Happy to try to diagnose it. What materials are you using?
Probably more important, can you outline your study schedule? How do those 30 hours fit into a week? Maybe you can share a simple schedule.

Thx.

Hi bb!

Thanks for your reply. I am using the OG for verbal and quant, and practice tests/questions from my quant prof, which are also OG questions from different years. I started with Manhattan prep for both verbal and quant, but then switched to a private course to learn the basics for quant (with videos and questions for each topic). For verbal I watched the Manhattan prep videos and then started with questions, but I found them really time consuming. Maybe I should have started earlier with practice questions.

I study around 2-3 hours on weekdays (from 8pm-11pm or 9pm-12am and then about 7 hours on Saturdays and Sundays).

I feel I need a proper study plan and maybe more material but I am quite lost and would appreciate your input.

I would suggest that you study 15-20 hours per week. But instead of studying from 8 PM to 11 PM, he would actually do it from 6 AM to 8 AM. Maybe I am wrong, but I feel after a busy day of work and stress the only thing you can study at 8 PM is Netflix. Which instead of Netflix, I would recommend reading some fiction books to help you with processing more complex textual information. My concern would be that you are studying at the time when your brain is not able to retain information and even though you watch a video, I’m not sure you’re able to retain and apply it.

There are many opinions about study materials and best approach to study because certain things work for certain people. I’m not sure what you’re using but I would structure it so that every day you start by reviewing what you have studied yesterday and you do a five or 10 minute review max, maybe even going a day or two before two and otherwise difficult topic that required a lot of memorization.

I would then study your material and plan to take at least 10 questions at the end consisting of three easy, three medium and three hard to get a sense of how you performed. A lot of the books and courses will have a quiz at the end. You don’t need to take 30 questions, 10 should give you a pretty good indicator where you are. If you get fewer than eight correct, do you have an issue and you need to fix it.

Thanks. I will try to do mornings from tomorrow on. Could you give me your input on verbal vs. quant, considering the scores? Should I focus on quant only for now? If not, how should I mix verbal vs. quant. Do one day quant and one day verbal?

Given the low quant score, should I start with the basics again, or just continue with questions?

Thanks again.

Hi bb

I'm a final year Bachelor's student, aiming for a 700+ GMAT score (tentative D-Day: 1st Nov, 2022). From the very beginning itself, I had made up my mind to prepare for the GMAT all by myself, using the free resources that are available throughout the internet.

So to begin with, I took a free mock from GMATWhiz on 03.04.22, in which I scored 500 (Q33 V26) with absolutely no knowledge of the test contents. I was a bit surprised upon seeing the split as I expected Verbal to be my strength. I noticed that I'm a decent guesser as I successfully guessed quite a number of 700+ questions, specially in DS. However, my initial GMAT prep got derailed due to semester exams and also my IELTS prep (still continuing).

After a few weeks, I got heavily involved in reading numerous articles and watching videos related to GMAT and finally stumbled upon this utopian forum called the GMAT Club! Meanwhile, I started with the Math and Verbal Reviews of OG 2022 (downloaded for free). Then, I moved on to solving 10 OG questions each from PS, DS, SC, CR & RC daily. I was getting most of the initial easy ones correct but I could realize that it was just my gut feeling or something which sounded right, helped me answering those questions.
Soon after, I took another free mock from Experts' Global in which my score plummeted to a 390 (Q 20 V22) which baffled me a bit initially but then I saw that almost all of the questions were beyond 650 level. Consequently, I still couldn't identify my strengths and weaknesses.

As I went through the explanations by various experts on the forum, I came to know about the different intricacies of GMAT Verbal : for example, I didn't even know what a modifier was, or what did parallelism mean, how to negate, strengthen or weaken arguments etc. It was then that I decided not to deplete the OG question bank without properly knowing the ins and outs of each 'n every topic.

As of now, I have started following Beat the GMAT's 60-Day Study Guide, using MGMAT pdfs. The number of GMAT resources out there is really overwhelming, starting from Manhattan's All the Quant + Verbal books, PowerScore books, Aristotle SC and then the other useful GMAT Club resources such as the Math & Grammar books, flashcards, notes and even the error logs for different OGs. Unfortunately, I still can't get my head around how to effectively and efficiently utilize the plethora of resources at my disposal.

Long story short, I am really apprehensive about my GMAT score as of now. The lack of sufficient prep time and a proper step-by-step plan of action/schedule is downright terrifying. I just want to stop beating around the bush and start to delve deeper into the individual topics asap, but unfortunately all this is making me even more puzzled.

Therefore, any advice or suggestion from your end would be tremendously helpful.

Thanks in advance!

Hello all
I just took my GMAT exam few days back and saw a horror score on the screen : 570(Q45/V25) while I was securing 690-710 in official mocks.
One thing I have realised that the zeal or confidence with which I solve Quant questions , I lack that in verbal section. I am planning to retake the exam in a month’s time. My target score is 720. I am a working professional and managing a good amount of 2hrs in weekdays .
Any help to improve verbal drastically to 38-40 will be appreciated.

I do not see any further necessity.

Yes. These are probably the best books mannequin buy. You will also get access to online exercises as well as practice tests. You will also need to purchase the official guide so that you have access to questions.

I think what you're struggling with is mostly the approach to the GMAT resources
Why don't you try this strategy that I proposed ages ago and still works. A lot of people have given it a thumbs up so I am sure it will help. Click the link below.
GMAT prep Strategy

Hi,

I've just started my prep for the GMAT and joined this forum. As suggested , I took the First Prep Exam at GMAT Prep and scored 490 (Q 33, V 25, IR 5). I'm an Engineering Undergraduate just about to pass out Ha!( meant Graduate). I wasn't able to complete all the Questions in any of the Parts. Attempted only 19 from Quant Section.

My target score is 700 + . I am doing full-time Job but getting a month's holiday. I want to sit for the exam in February end 2023.

I haven't purchased any material yet. I would like your advice on how to shape my journey and where to start with what material. English is not my Mother-tongue.

I realize I have to work on both : Quant and Verbal.

BB and other experts please give feedback.

Hi,

I started my GMAT journey in 2022 March and I took an official practice test and scored 370,
my target GMAT score is 740. I prepped for 3 months and took my first GMAT test and scored a 610 (V32, Q41).
I have 1.5 months to prep again and give my GMAT to score a 740 (Q50,V41)
how should I proceed to make my study guide to achieving my target score
I have been practicing from OG books, E-GMAT, and taking the official practice tests
any help would be grateful.

Thanks,
Saloni

Hi. 240 points of improvement is a great result!

It’s going to be challenging to get another 130 points in a month and a half. The good news is that your score is not lopsided so you have more room to improve on both the quant and verbal sides.

Again, improving 240 points is really really good. Honestly, I will keep doing what you’ve been doing. Not many people can improve that much. People can get high scores but they started a lot higher and when you talk about improvement, you’ve done really well.

So I would not be disappointed with your results, I would just do more. Do you feel like you’re not able to continue to improve for some reason?
